P1 Class Blog Term 1/2 2024

Welcome to everyone in Primary 1 and to our new and existing families.  What a busy session we have had so far, learning and sharing with each other, especially at our Primary 1 curriculum event.  Thank you to all who managed to attend.

We also enjoyed our annual Halloween celebrations with our wonderful Halloween party in the afternoon arranged by our Parent Council.  The costumes were excellent, and everyone left with a treat!

We are working hard in literacy and are doing a great job of learning our sounds. We have learned our first few sounds a, t, s, i, p, n, r, m, d, e and have been using this knowledge to blend and to read words.  We will continue to learn new sounds so we can build new words every week.  Common words are our words we learn every week and can be tricky.  Please use the sound cards and the common word cards to practise at home.  These are yours to keep, cut out and use as you wish.  We have started reading books and are enjoying taking these home to read with adults.

In numeracy we have been learning to count and form our numbers to 10 correctly.  We have been learning numbers before, after and in between, it’s tricky so we will keep practising – keep challenging us at home by asking us questions!  We have moved onto addition and we are enjoying creating bigger numbers with our calculations.   In class we have lots of different activities that help us to learn and we enjoy the challenge of completing target tasks independently.

We have been lucky to have special visitors into our class for our People Who Help Us topic.  We were already very knowledgeable in this topic so we built on what we knew and looked at people who help us in our community.  We had Glenda, the school nurse, in to visit and Mrs Fiona Lawrence, a nurse at a local hospital, in to tell us about their differing roles in nursing.  It was so much fun and Fiona brought in bandages so we could try bandaging each other and our teddies, she also brought some fruit for us to try to highlight the health benefits.  Amazing!   This term we are looking into mapping our local area.  You may see us out and about in the area doing research!

We will soon be busy rehearsing for our Christmas shows.  Time flies when we are enjoying ourselves!  We look forward to entertaining everyone in December with our two shows.   Look out for more information nearer the time.
