Rudy writes his thoughts and emotions about the pandemic to his past-self.
Dear Rudy,
I am writing this letter to inform you on the upcoming challenges you will face due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK is about to go into a state of lockdown which will prohibit you from doing many things you currently take for granted; communication with your friends will be limited to group chats and Zoom calls; your weekly game of fives and round of golf will become a thing of the past as government restrictions need to be adhered to and even activities as mundane as attending school will no longer be possible. Although the future may seem bleak, I promise that you will find happiness in places you may have forgotten it existed.
Disney+ will launch on the day lockdown begins, and if you pester mum enough, she will buy it for you. It has access to almost the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and all 28 or so seasons of the Simpson’s, it’s fantastic! However, the piece de resistance has to be the complete collection of Star Wars movies and TV shows. Rudy, can you recall all of the lightsabre battles that filled your days with endless fun? Your fascination with the world that George Lucas created will bring you the joy you desire in these times of despair. As I sit here now, a month into quarantine, I can assure you that a galaxy far far away will once again become home. Having sat in our room with the curtains closed and the lights switched off, I promise there will be no greater satisfaction in your day than hearing John Williams orchestra belt out the music for the opening crawl, do you trust me?
Another aspect of life in isolation that you will develop a real passion for is exploration. You will be restricted to one hour of exercise per day, and the majority of that time will be taken up by a process you may have found tedious in the past, but now due to the restrictions on movement, walking your dog will be the highlight of your day. The peace and serenity that you will find no further than two miles from the house, will teach you things about yourself that would never have been possible to understand only months prior to what is about to come. Every day I feel the connection between myself and my surroundings growing stronger, even though the trees and rocks can’t speak you have to believe that the stories they will tell you are among the most beautiful you have ever heard.
Now Rudy, go forth with this information and don’t let negativity consume you. The secret to success during these unprecedented times is happiness and passion, as it is our passions that give us the strength to live every day to the fullest, it is our dreams that make our lives a better place. I know that you’ll come through this, because as I write this to you, I am doing just fine.
