The tragic event that recently occured in Mozambique was catastrophic. A rubbish dump collapsed on to sixteen people. This occurred because of heavy rainfall that triggered the landslide in Maputos dump, This incident makes the realities of life in these underdeveloped countries more evident to the greater world.

In the city Hulene lies the 42 acre dump that holds fifteen meter high mountains of rubbish and the people that slumber in its surface. Imagine yourself in your warm comfy house, your walls and your privacy including your kitchen and your bed. Now let’s imagine you are living underneath fifteen meters of rubbish with no walls, no food and definitely no water. On top of this you must endure the horrible atmosphere, the stench of waste and the knowing that at any moment your life could be ripped from you.

A woman called Marie Jose was a witness to this terrible event and told the public what she saw, “We came out and heard some people screaming, we didn’t know what was happening, When we went to investigate we found that the waste had come down to the houses and a lot of people were among it, trying to dig it up and rescue their families”.

This is simply why we as a nation must do more to combat the poverty crisis in these countries instead of ignoring the oversea problems. It is but our duty to support our neighbours to create a better world for all of society.
