German cities will be allowed to ban older diesel vehicles from some areas following last week’s court case.

The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig said the cities of Stuttgart and Duesseldorf could legally ban more higher polluting cars.

The government disagrees with the new law saying it will cause disruption to the citizens.

The environmental group DUH said bans were necessary after about 70 German cities exceeded European Union nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels limits last year.

Diesel emissions containing nitrogen oxide can cause respiratory disease.

Analysts said the decision could lead to similar action across Europe as it’s not just Germany  – cities across Europe are struggling to meet EU air quality standards.

The German government will probably start a new national policy to ensure some consistency in the country.

New diesel cars will not be affected but costumers are moving away from the diesel products and that will get worse due to the ban. That’s a big problem for the industry and even though diesel cars produce high levels of nitrogen oxide they produce low levels of carbon dioxide.

So even though banning the older cars could benefit one problem it could cause another environmental problem. It could all be solved if everyone drove an electric car.
