On the 27th of September 2017, the red carpet was rolled out in St Andrews and St Brides high school for the premiere of their East Kilbride 70th anniversary documentary: ‘Round and About EK’

Guests were greeted with open arms and a warm welcome from the students.  They were invited to view the hard work of S2 pupils, along with help from the local feeder schools.

It was a day that had been long awaited by the pupils of classes 2F2 and 2D; tonight they could sit back, relax and enjoy all their hard work come to fruition.  The event was attended by headteachers, councillors, priests, MPs and the parents of those involved – even the official South Lanarkshire Council photographer.

The young film makers trepidation soon dissolved as the evening commenced, as the audience appeared to be enjoying the unfolding of East Kilbride’s story. When the credits rolled at the end of the documentary they were met with a huge round of applause – it was clear to see all those involved shared a sense of pride for their achievements.

The evening was a huge success, the guests at the premiere learned more about East Kilbride’s gems such as Langland’s moss, Calderglen country park, The Village, the Dollan Aqua Centre, Whitelees Windfarm and St Brides church.

The premiere came to a close with a round of speeches each full of praise for the efforts of the students. We first heard from Des Dickson, the head of education services for South Lanarkshire. This was followed by Deputy Lord Provost, Collette Stevenson, and finally Mrs Mullen, headteacher of the hosting school.  Also in attendance was Doctor Lisa Cameron MP – and it is rumoured she may even be taking the documentary down to show her colleagues at Westminster!

To quote Elizabeth B. Mitchell, a great believer in the potential of East Kilbride:

“I believe that with the work of many hands, and many minds that the new town of East Kilbride is an acknowledged success’’.

The same can indeed be said for the fantastic documentary shown on Tuesday – and of course the work all over the school.
