It’s that time again, Saturday saw Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic clash in The Old Firm Derby.

This time the game was played at Ibrox in the west end of Glasgow. Celtic came out winners beating Rangers 2-0. The win extended Celtic’s lead in the Premiership over their Old Firm rivals to eight points and 57 games domestically unbeaten.

In the opening quarter of the game the  visitors  dominated possession and worked a handful of chances trying to find the shrewd final ball that would unlock Rangers defence. Griffths sent a free kick wide and saw another effort saved before the end of the first half. Roberts veered past Lee Hodson, advancing his way into the opposing team’s penalty area, but hit a shot straight at the advancing Foderingham while fellow team mate, Tom Rogic was well-placed in the centre. Ross McCrorie the 19 year old defender grew into the game as he was putting in tackles and winning  the ball cleanly. Alfredo Morelos the Colombian was regularly caught offside but always carried a threat and almost made contact at the back post with a James Tavernier cross.

The goalless first 45 minutes would have heartened the home side but they had to renew their poise after the break. As the game progressed and players began to tire Rangers did start to leave a number of gaps in defence from which Celtic made them pay. The deadlock was broken when the ball travelled past several defenders into the box and Rogic thumped it high into the net with a powerful finish from the Aussie. For the second goal, Fabio Cardoso failed to cover Griffiths run, which he received from a well-weighted pass from Patrick Roberts, whose set up play was rewarded with an accurate finish from the Scottish striker. In between the two goals, Alfredo Morelos won a header at close range, but Gordon blocked it with his chest and soon after Josh Windass drove a shot just wide.

It was a well deserved win for Celtic given the balance of the play on the day. While the performance from the hosts had clearly improved from  previous seasons.
