Students were invited to see Studio 32’s production of Sister Act performed on Wednesday night, 13th of September. The drama department had invited any interested students to come and watch the play. Mr Kernan directed the show as part of Studio 32. Many students attended and the show received a hugely positive reception from the students.
Our very own teachers – Ms Muir, Ms Quinn, Ms McNair and Mr Kernan – were all involved in this spectacular show. Ms Muir played a teenager in the police station, making fun of a policeman as well as playing a nun, along with Ms Quinn who played a dancer. With Ms Muir, Ms Quinn and Mr Kernan from the drama department and Ms McNair from the social studies department the show was certainly something to enjoy and remember.
Ms McNair had important role, which she played perfectly. As the befitting Mother Superior, playing the part involved being firm, strong and logical but ultimately sympathetic near the end. Mr Kernan however was the one who made the show happen as the role of director. The show gave a swathe of amusement and excitement to the pupils of our school who had the privilege to attend this theatre production. This was Ms McNair’s first lead role which she described as “nerve racking,” although she would do it all over again if she ever got the chance and described it as “living the dream for a week”.
Ms McNair also mentioned that it was an amazing cast that felt more like a family the more time they spent together. She also believes that while the show was a comedy and was indeed hilarious, it also had moral messages. Also, Ms McNair recommends anyone to get involved with things like this – as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, as nothing is the same no matter how many times you perform the same thing.
Studio 32’s Sister Act was a very professional play and a great laugh, with both students and adults clapping to songs and laughing at the 60’s themed humour. The show had vibrant characters with catchy songs (and even some hymns).
It showed a new light on sisterhood, taking a jab at the aspect that, from the outside world, being a nun seems tedious or monotonous, but that nuns enjoy the routines they go through. And for the nuns, they believe that the outside world is a dangerous, evil place. But the nuns are shown how much better life can be when the arrival of Deloris Van Cartier, a bar singer in Philadelphia fighting for fame, is forced to join the nuns after witnessing a murder by the hand of her boyfriend; a corrupt mob boss Curtis. Deloris adds some spice to the nun’s choir.
The choir picks up some attention from local news, and starts to snowball, being on national news, international news, and then the Pope! But they also pick up the attention of Curtis along the way, who attempts to kill Deloris while before performing to the Pope.
The show was, yet again, a great production from Studio 32, and we hope to have the opportunity to see what show they choose to produce next.
