We all have become accustomed to hearing about the ever present threat of drink driving.

However there are always going to be certain groups of people who believe they are above the law. Repeatedly falling into this bracket are successful footballers, such as the world renowned Wayne Rooney.

Just after securing a deal to move back to his boyhood club of Everton, where he first made a name for himself at only 17 years of age, Rooney has hit a new low. On the 1st of September 2017 Rooney’s world was flipped upside down after being arrested on suspected drink driving.

The veteran midfielder’s wife, Colleen Rooney ,was on holiday in Spain with the pair’s three children aged – 7, 4 and 1 whilst also being pregnant with their fourth child together currently.

At the time of his arrest the police officer who had stopped him firstly pulled the new Everton singing aside as he had noticed he was driving with the rear light inactive. When the officer reached the window of the high-end sports car the first thing he noticed was a young woman sitting in the passenger seat.

The woman, to the disgust of many, was an unknown figure before this event unfolded leaving many to wonder who she was and what Rooney’s relationship was with this young woman.

The controversial ex-England international was set a due date for his court hearing which took place on the 18th of September 2017, where he confessed to all charges pressed against him. In an interview with the main judge of the case, it was revealed that Rooney’s wife was nowhere to be seen during the prosecution.

Speaking to the press the ex Manchester United captain stated
“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.”
Rooney was handed a two year ban from driving and twelve months of community service, as well as having to pay in excess of £170 for damages he could have caused to other vehicles.

Following the outbreak of this story many of Rooney’s long time fans have been left in shock at the actions of their ‘favourite’ player.

In my opinion I believe that the fame of the player went to his head a bit and was left having no control over himself which is bound to happen eventually to a lot of people who are earning the amount that the players of his calibre do. This leaves me to feel sympathy but also a sense of fear for what the future could entail for other younger high earning stars of football.
