This past week has brought so much tragedy and suffering that it has left many of us feeling bleak and pessimistic about the world as a whole. So, here are 5 stories that will possibly restore your faith in humanity, but at the very least will make you smile.

1.” Chainsaw Nun” Becomes Viral Sensation With Her Good Deed

As we all know, Hurricane Irma struck in recent weeks, devastating part of the Caribbean and United States. But in this time off loss and hardship, one hero stepped up with a most unusual good deed.

Sister Margaret Ann of Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School in Miami-Dade, Florida, decided she had to help relief efforts in any way she could, and she took up that promise when she found a chainsaw in a cupboard at her school. Determined to help, the Sister taught herself how to use the machine, and then headed out onto the roads to help clear fallen trees.

The Miami-Dade Police Department spotted her hard at work, and shared a picture of her on Facebook to celebrate her goodness, and the Internet adored it. Soon this one nun’s act of kindness spread across the world, and showed the spots of hope in an otherwise dire situation.

The police told her that they would clear up the debris, but, as she told CNN, she responded “It’s going to take them too long. It’s dangerous; people are going to get hurt here.”

You can hear what else Sister Margaret has to say here, on ABC News’ website.

2. Woman Reunites With Beloved Childhood Pet Her Parents Gave Up 11 Years Ago

Kate Griffin was just strolling along the street on a perfectly normal afternoon, when she spotted something, or rather someone, that brought back a wave of memories. Cami. A little white dog that her parents had decided to give up more than 10 years ago.

Griffin, a 24 year old college student, was shocked to see Cami, who she had resigned herself to never seeing again, but was ecstatic at the reunion. Born and bred in Park Ridge, Illinois, and still a resident there, Griffin describes Cami as the “best thing that ever happened to me as a kid”.

For five years the two shared an inseparable bond, after Griffin and her sister had begged her parents into letting them bring home the puppy, but the two were torn apart eleven years ago. After her parents got divorced, it was decided that it was best for the family to give up Cami, rather than constantly shunting the family pet between two households.

But 11 years later the two were blessed with a brief, but sweet, reunion, allowing Griffin some closure with her furry best friend.

3. A Siberian Man Wins Back His Girlfriend From A Flying Van

A man in the Siberian city of Biysk decided to go all out to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, by suspending a van outside her third floor window with a crane and serenading her from it.

Much to Yelena Gorbunova’s shock, she opened her bedroom window on her 29th birthday to find her ex-beau Alexander in a suspended van covered in balloons, whilst a saxophonist played her favourite song, and Alexander sang to her. All before she was showered in gifts.

Yelena’s neighbours weren’t entirely supportive of the event though, and the police were called to  remove the van. But, love won out as the authorities concluded that the van didn’t break any laws, and Alexander was allowed to stay and win back his lost love. The question remains, how is Alexander going to top this next time they have a fight?
