The horrifying story of the Manchester attack in recent days has induced panic throughout the country, causing the General Election campaign to grind to a halt. The inhumane actions of a suicide bomber left 22 dead and 60 injured.
Amongst the casualties were children, young people and their families, attending the concert of a well known American singer and songwriter, Ariana Grande.
Although the threat level has, for the time being, been increased to from ‘severe’ to ‘critical’, it is essential that we, the people of Britain, do not let the fear of another attack control our lives. For the safety of those like you and I, armed military personnel have been deployed, ensuring no further attacks take place and protecting the people and culture of the country.
Condolences and offers of support have poured in from around the world, standing in unison against acts of terrorism. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel said:
“It is incomprehensible that someone could use a joyful pop concert to kill or seriously injure so many people. This suspected terrorist attack will merely strengthen our determination to continue working together with our friends in the UK to combat those who plan and carry out such despicable acts. People in the UK can rest assured that Germany stands shoulder to shoulder with them.”
Having looked deeper into this tragedy, the bravery of both the emergency services and the people of Manchester was highlighted, specifically through social media. Their actions demonstrated that cowardice will always be defeated by bravery, goodness will prevail over evil. It was seen in the hours following the attack that the people of Manchester pulled together as a community to help in any way they could. Some took young people into their homes and cared for them until they could be collected by their parents, others provided a taxi service to ensure those at the concert got home safely. The incredible caring manner of so many during this tragic night certainly shows the difference a kind action can do. This is something we can take and apply to our lives everyday – smiling to those around you, offer companionship to those who seem lost or lonely or simply giving money to SCIAF to help those in developing countries who are not as fortunate.
It is in this moment of sadness and mourning that the people of Britain must come together as one, offering our thoughts, kindness and prayers not only to those affected in the Manchester attacks, but also to those who protect our country each and every day. It is through their time and bravery that Britain remains a safe place to live.
