Looking forward to 2016 in the Oystercatcher, Mr. Wilkie, the teacher editor, sat down with Jamie Clayton to give an idea of his teaching and views of the school.

When did you become a teacher  ?

What is your day like being a English teacher?

Very busy with heaps of marking and planning, but is usually very enjoyable. I love being able to discuss literature and create texts with classes.

What is your favourite part of teaching English?

Teaching story writing. I think the process of writing can be incredibly exciting, and being able to teach it can be just as fun.

What is your least favourite part of teaching English?

Having to cover such a wide subject area. English is so vast! From punctuation and grammar, to analysis and evaluation, to writing and essays, to studying different types of texts. It can be a bit overwhelming at times not being able to fit everything in.

Are you enjoying the school newspaper so far?

Yes it has been a good experience. It’s great to help nurture journalistic talents, of which there are so many in this school. I’ve also enjoyed getting to see student’s perspectives on the world around them.

What has been your favourite article from the school news paper so far?

The articles written about the Paris attacks and Syrian refugees. Many teachers, including myself, were very moved by the profound and mature writing that was created in response to these terrible situations.

If you could have any other job other than teaching what would it be?

A news reporter. At least I get to edit a newspaper!
