MICRO-TYCO

(A true experience)

As we head into the wonderful month of December, we sadly finish an amazing month of Micro Tyco November. It has had been a hard slog for some to come up with the goods, but worth it as we will all remember for the foreseeable future.

The Charity

(The Challenge)

The challenge was to start off with trying to make a pound turn into hundreds of pounds. Now that sound likes an impossible challenge, but that’s part of the challenge. You’re not alone you have help from teachers and S6 mentors alike. You have to start your own little business and try to sell things with others from your year.

(Who We Are Helping and Where the Money Goes)

All the money raised by Micro-Tyco and other wild heart foundations is invested by wild hearts and micro-loans for poor entrepreneurs in the developing world. The money also goes to help people trapped in poverty in 37 countries!

My Experience

I was lucky enough to be able to take part in this wonderful challenge, and it was an incredible experience. My group’s name was The Rising Stars of the Future (I know what an awesome name – not!) and it consisted of 6 first years. We had 3 awesome sixth years, and of course our lovely teacher mentor Mrs O’Neil. Now if our team couldn’t get any bigger, we also had the support from our business mentor who was the lovely Mr Tony Quidgley. Now as I learnt quickly, you have to give up a lot of lunchtimes and sometimes even morning interval. But it is all worth it when you see the joy people get from buying your products and I’m also so glad young people are helping other children they have never met.

What we did to raise money

My group did quite a few things to try to raise money. We did guess how many sweets in the jar, sold candy canes, sold homemade cakes at a local coffee morning, and sold homemade Christmas trees with sweet bauble décor. When I first signed up for Micro-Tyco I never could of imagined how much time and effort it takes up. I would say if you aren’t the best at sticking to something, this isn’t really going to be your thing. It is a wee bit stressful, but it is definitely worth it and the outcome is just amazing.

Conclusion

This has been one of the best months of first year so far and it has giving me the skills of encouragement, team work and more importantly sharing. You never realise how much sharing means until you have to work as a team and share roles and share basically the experience. All and all it has been great a few low moments but who doesn’t have a few off days.
