Primary 4 October Blog

Welcome Back!

We’ve had a busy start to Primary 4.  We have settled in really well and are enjoying our learning this term.

Lucy said, ‘Being at school is exciting because we get to make things and have lots of fun.’

Our IDL this term is The Romans. Lailah says ‘We have been learning about the Romans. I liked it because it is fun to find out what the Romans invented, like the arches and that they built Hadrian’s wall because the Scots were annoying them! We also found out that they invaded because they wanted what was in our soil.’

Noah tells us that ‘Romans invented roads and we call them Roman Roads because they are so straight. They even dug through hills to build the roads.’

Ariana has found it interesting to find out what Romans wore. ‘They wore togas and tunics,’ she says.

Kaiyah has been interested to find out about different Romans ‘like Gladiators and soldiers.’

We will continue learning more on this subject and we welcome children to share their own learning too.

Literacy

We are working well on learning our spelling words using our Active Spelling strategies. We are even using different strategies at home. Jorgia tells us that because she had been writing an Acrostic poem at school, she wanted to write one at home to practise her spelling words because ‘I wanted to practise them more and I like learning about poems’.

We have been enjoying reading our novel Cliffhanger. Jacob B. says ‘I have liked it because it is funny and it has hard words like ‘triumphantly’ in it.’

Skye likes the way it has been written with postcards to tell us more. ‘It makes it quite funny,’ she said.

We have been encouraging children to read for enjoyment.  Our Reading Champions are Alexa, Kaiyah and  Millie. Kaiyah tells us that they organise fun activities ‘like the Reading Silver Celebration that we had.’  If a child reads a book they enjoy then please encourage them to share this with the class. We would love to hear about all their reading at home. They can also share this on Google Classroom.

Google Classroom

All children have been issued with the log in information they will need to access this.  Games and other resources will be posted here to help with your child’s learning at home.

If there are any problems with getting access, please let us know.

Numeracy

We have been working hard on place value, addition and subtraction within 1000 and estimating and rounding.  We are now working on multiplication tables.

We have also been learning more about 2D and 3D shape with Mrs Potter.  Adam was telling us that, ‘we did an investigation about seeing how many faces, vertices and edges a shape had and if it could roll or not.’ He found this really interesting and fun.

The class would like to say. ‘the subtraction is getting harder!’ Any work at home on counting  backwards, in steps of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10  starting from any number, always helps.

P4 also took part in Maths Week Scotland.  They enjoyed trying different stations, moving around and taking part in different outdoor maths games and problems.

STEM

We have been looking at the movement of the sun, Earth and moon. We have learned about new moon missions happening now and have developed our engineering skills by building with the KAPLA bricks.

Rhea said she enjoyed learning about the different phases of the moon because, ‘It will be better for when you grow up and you could teach your kids!’

Ariana particularly enjoyed building with the KAPLA bricks. She said, ’It was kind of like Lego.’

Lailah loved the starry night picture because, ’It was a fun activity!’

Teejay enjoyed creating a pictogram of daylight hours in Hamilton!

Gym Days

We have been playing lots of new games like ‘Tails’,  ‘Cone Game’, ‘Crack the Code’, ‘Body Parts’ and ‘Shark Attack’ and we love to play tig games to warm up like ‘Chaos’, ‘Turtle’ and ‘Disco’ tig.

We have also had a go at Yoga. The children really enjoyed trying something different. Kaiyah said, ‘I liked that it was calming and doing the wolf pose.’

Bella said, ‘I liked the bits when you had to balance.’

Rhea ‘liked that it was something we can all take part in and stay calm and happy. My favourite thing was the five finger breathing.’

Skye ‘liked the activities and that we stay calm. I liked the bumble bee breathing.’

Indoor Gym – Tuesday afternoon.

Outdoor PE/Learning – Wednesday and Thursday afternoon

Please remember trainers and to wear clothing appropriate to go out in all weathers!

Please  – no jewellery for gym days including earrings, necklaces and rings

A wee reminder

We have noticed that some of the children do not have their cardigans/jumpers/shoes /jackets/ packed lunch boxes/ water bottles labelled.   Please can you make sure you write your child’s name on their items.  Thank you.
