Good morning and welcome to Home Learning Week 8. I hope you are all safe and well, and you are enjoying the long weekend with your family. As Monday is a holiday (please take the day off and have fun), I have listed fewer tasks to be undertaken this week.  These tasks can be carried out in any order. Everyone is in a different situation so please do whatever you can with your child and don’t worry about completing them all.

Literacy

Spelling

Below are the phonemes/phoneme words/common words for each group. First have a chat about the spelling rule for the phoneme words and check your child knows the meaning of each word. Then try to practise them every day using a multi-sensory activity.  Multi-sensory ideas could include: making the words using playdough, painting the words, writing the words in a sand tray or on a whiteboard/chalkboard, as well as, writing the words on a computer then changing the font/size, writing the words using fancy letters or with eyes shut.  The words could even be written using the hand not normally used for writing.  Can you and your child think of any new multi-sensory activities to try? You could give your child a spelling quiz, either oral or written, at the end of the week to see how many words they can remember.

Reds

Any colouring tasks or pencil control activities (please see link below) which could be undertaken would also be beneficial as this would aid development of finger muscles which in turn would help with writing letters and numbers.

Ask your child to write a letter to someone that they are missing right now. It could be to a friend, family member, someone from school or someone from a club. Ask them to tell this person what kind of things they are missing doing and what they’re most looking forward to when we no longer have to stay at home. Also, ask them to tell the person what they have been doing to keep busy. Remind your child about V.C.O.P. (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation). Please use the link below to access letter templates.  It is also fine to use your own paper if you are unable to print these out. Use the picture below to help with the layout (please ask your child to write the date under the address, as this is what we did in class). If possible, perhaps your child could post it to the person.

Ask them to draw a picture of them on a blank piece of paper, including all body parts in the correct places. Then use sounds/phonemes to “have a go” at writing some words around the picture, explaining what they miss doing with that person. If possible, perhaps your child could post it to them.

Ask your child to choose a book of their choice to share with you. It could be one that you have at home or one from the Free Book Website (see tab “Free Books” at the top). Then ask them to create a new front cover for the book  based on what they have read. Please remind them to include the title, the author and the illustrator. This job can be completed in the Home Learning jotter or a piece of paper. Also, ask them to be a text detective and see if they can spot any of their spelling words for this week in the book.

Please try to practise all words in the booklet pictured below, using paint, pasta or playdough etc.

Also, ask your child to choose a book of their choice that you can share together. It could be one that you have at home or one from the Free Book Website (see tab “Free Books” at the top). Please set aside time each day to spend some time reading for pleasure. There are lots of books to choose from on the Free Book Website. The link for this was posted last Wednesday. Have fun!

Numeracy

Please find below this term’s Learn Its/Counting activities and tasks for your child’s group. Workbook pages can be completed orally, on paper or in the Home Learning jotter. There are also two online activities on Studyladder for each group. Logins were given out to the children before we finished, as well as, enclosed in the Home Learning packs.

We spoke briefly about “quarter to” before we finished, please let me know if anyone is finding this tricky.

Please continue to practise counting forwards to 10, as well as, counting backwards.  Also, practise writing numbers to 10 correctly and try to count different objects around the house e.g. spoons, crayons. Discuss numbers after/1 more, before/1 less and between, e.g. What number is 1 more than 2?, What number comes before 5?  What number comes between 7 and 9?

When completing the Time worksheet below, please write digital times as 2:00 and not 02:00.

I have loved seeing all the photographs of the children and their great jobs that have  already been emailed in. I have seen a fab World War 1 tank, a super reading job and a fab coronavirus time capsule sheet, as well as, children completing Time tasks and even doing extra Money jobs! Keep up the good work!

I will post our “Check-in Station” on Thursday so all the boys and girls can let me know how they are doing. It would be great if everyone could leave a comment.

Hi boys and girls,

I hope you’re enjoying the home learning activities for this week. Tomorrow I thought we could do something a bit different and go on a ‘virtual’ school trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park. There is a live lesson all about monkeys this Thursday at 12pm on their Facebook page. During the lesson, there will be a question and answer session if you have anything you would like to ask Shonagh. After the lesson, there will be a fun quiz to test your knowledge. If you can’t tune in at 12pm, don’t worry. You can still watch the video at a later date. Last week’s lesson about penguins is still available too!
