Good morning and welcome to Home Learning Week 6. I hope you are all safe and well, and enjoyed a lovely long weekend.
I have listed tasks which can be undertaken during the week and can be carried out in any order. Everyone is in a different situation so please do whatever you can with your child and don’t worry about completing them all.
Literacy
Spelling
Below are the phonemes/phoneme words/common words for each group. First have a chat about the spelling rule for the phoneme words and check your child knows the meaning of each word. Then try to practise them every day using a multi-sensory activity. Multi-sensory ideas could include: making the words using play dough, painting the words, writing the words in a sand tray or on a whiteboard/chalkboard, as well as, writing the words on a computer then changing the font/size, writing the words using fancy letters or with eyes shut. The words could even be written using the hand not normally used for writing. Can you and your child think of any new multi-sensory activities to try? You could give your child a spelling quiz, either oral or written, at the end of the week to see how many words they can remember.
Reds
“ea” phoneme – bread, head, deaf, ready, dead, instead, pleasant, pheasant, weather, feather, wealth, learn, earth Common Words – children, because
Yellows
Same as the Red Group. In addition, ask your child if they can think of any others words which have the “ea” phoneme. Please check that the words are spelled correctly and ask them to practise these words as well.
Greens
Consolidation Week – Please practise the phoneme and common words from the last two weeks (see “Green – Spelling” tab at the top).
Blues
All the letters of the alphabet. Please also try to practise saying them correctly and writing them using correct formation. Common Words – I, in, it
Any colouring tasks or pencil control activities (please see link below) which could be undertaken would also be beneficial as this would aid development of finger muscles which in turn would help with writing letters and numbers.
CHALLENGE ACTIVITY – Try writing a sentence for each word. Remember to use V.C.O.P. (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation).
Reading
Please find the text below for your child’s group.
Strawberries
Please copy this passage into the Home Learning jotter and fill in the missing words. Then try to answer the questions in a sentence.
Grapes
Please try to answer the questions in a sentence in the Home Learning jotter.
Summarising Task
Ask your child to choose a book of their choice and read it together. Then discuss the main point(s) from the beginning, middle and end of the story and ask your child to draw a picture to illustrate them. Next, ask them to write a few sentences to describe what is happening in each of their pictures. Try to use the words “At the beginning of the story”, “Then” and “Finally” at the start of the sentences. This could be done on a piece of paper (like the picture below) or in the Home Learning jotter.
Pineapples
Please try to answer the questions in a sentence in the Home Learning jotter.

Please set aside time each day to spend some time reading for pleasure. There are lots of books to choose from on the Free Book Website (see tab “Free Books” at the top).
Numeracy
Please find below this term’s Learn Its/Counting activities and tasks for your child’s group. Textbook/workbook pages can be completed orally, on paper or in the Home Learning jotter. Worksheets can be printed out, completed orally or in the Home Learning jotter. There are also two online activities on Studyladder for each group. Logins were given out to the children before we finished, as well as, enclosed in the Home Learning packs.
Circles
For question 2 on page 82, if possible, ask family members.
Squares
On page 30, when children are asked to make a lunch graph for their class, if possible, ask family members and complete the graph (like the one shown on the workbook page) in the Home Learning jotter or on paper.
Triangles
Please continue to count forwards to 20, as well as, counting backwards. Try to count different objects around the house e.g. spoons, crayons. Discuss numbers after/1 more, before/1 less and between, e.g. What number is 1 more than 14?, What number comes before 12? What number comes between 16 and 18?
Other Activities
Below are some home learning ideas for each year group for the topic “Dinosaurs” which you and your child can continue to work on, choosing as many activities as you would like. There are also a few links which you might find helpful when completing some of the tasks. Books and the internet may also be needed for research but please only do what you are able to. Have fun!
There are also some mindfulness colouring sheets which can be accessed using the link below and a lovely Art activity (see picture below) which could be undertaken by the whole family!
Mindfulness Positivity Colouring Sheets
I hope you and your child enjoyed the visit to the Science Centre last week. I know I did! There should be another virtual trip this week. Please keep checking the school app for details.
Remember you can share any good pieces of work by emailing them to gw18burnsidephotos@glow.sch.uk
I have loved seeing all the photographs of the children and their great jobs that have already been emailed in. I have included some of these jobs in the “WOW Work” tab at the top. Please remember our blog is public so I can’t use any photos that have children in them. Names will not be matched with photos. Mrs McGarvey is able to use photographs of the children on Twitter. I have seen pictures of a boy sitting working at his desk, a great W.W. 1 tank, a rocket flying off to space and a carnival in the garden that have been sent to Mrs McGarvey this week!
I will post our “Check-in Station” on Thursday so all the boys and girls can let me know how they are doing. It would be great if everyone could leave a comment. Please tell the children I am missing them all and I am so proud of them for trying hard with their home learning.
I hope you all have a super week and keep safe everyone!

Hi Mrs Lindsay, is this the dictionary that the booklet refers to? 2005 edition with coloured spots and it says age 7+ on the front. Is it worth getting? We don’t have any dictionaries at home and it is only 90p plus postage.
Love the WOW wall!
Hi Mrs Gallie, I hope you and your family are well. It is the Collins Junior Dictionary that we use in school but it has a different cover. Perhaps that one is an updated version to the one we use. I’m sure it would still be helpful. Stay safe. Mrs Lindsay
Hi Mrs Lindsay,
I hope you are well!
I have just purchased the Collins Dictionary on Google Read but unfortunately it doesn’t work the same way as the actual book. Is there another way we can tackle page 10 of Dictionary? There are no guide words on the online version. Shall we just find the word on the equivalent page online?
Hi Mrs Rooney, I’m fine, thank you. I hope you and your family are well too. Don’t complete page 6 of the Dictionary workbook, just discuss the term “guide words” with Lewis and complete pages 9 and 10 of the workbook entitled “More than One” and “Verbs” (if possible). I saw a picture of the VE cakes you baked with Lewis! They were fab! Stay safe. Mrs Lindsay
Hi Mrs Lindsay,
We are well thank you!
Ah this now makes sense. I was looking at the activity number rather than the page number. 🙄 Thank you for your help.
Aww thank you, they actually tasted lovely, especially the icing. Well Lewis definitely thought so, he licked the spoon and the bowl!
Take care,

National Numeracy Day activity- planning a trip- you have £100 to spend on a day out and you have to work out where you would go, who to take with you and what you would do with your money. You don’t have to spend all of it.
Mrs Gallie, thank you for this. Mrs Lindsay
Good morning Mrs Lindsay
How are you?
My tank is finally finished and my mum has sent in a picture so you can see it.
Last night I camped out in my back garden with my family. It was really fun and enjoyed it a lot.
I have been doing some dictionary work and using the dictionary my mum got as a leaving gift when she was at Burnside Primary.
Today we are going to play basketball again and try out my new basketball shoes.
Have a good weekend 🙂
Lewis Saunders
Hi, Lewis! I’m fine, thank you. How are you? I saw the picture of your tank, it’s great! That’s lovely you are using your Mum’s school dictionary to do your jobs. I hope your new basketball shoes help you become an even better player! Have a good weekend too. Stay safe. Mrs Lindsay
Hi Mrs Lindsay how are you doing? Today me and my sis and mum are going to release the frogs we were looking after anyway bye.
Hi, Emily! It is lovely to hear from you! How exciting! Perhaps you could take a picture and ask Mum (if she’s not too busy) to help you send it to me? I hope the sun stays shining for the long weekend. Have a great time with your family and stay safe. Mrs Lindsay
