Ailsa wrote a diary entry for a great day and a Rainforest Report!

On Thursday morning my Mummy went to her work for her new Primary 1’s induction so Daddy was the teacher for a change. Β We did our work on google classroom and I liked reading my Nancy Drew book. We had a yummy lunch and then I was excited because my Daddy surprised us by getting our new paddling-pool filled up! We went and got our swimming costumes on and then ran out, jumped in and splashed each other. Β Then, we decided to make Lego rafts for Miss Begg`s blog and test them in the pool. It was a great day and it ended with a lovely pizza for dinner.

The Rainforest

A rainforest is a thick forest that grows in hot and wet areas of earth.Β  There is rain almost every day and it is very humid all year round.Β  The largest rainforest is the Amazonian Rainforest and is in South America.Β  All Tropical Rainforests are found in-between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.Β Β

Rainforests have 4 layers.Β  The Emergent Layer, The Canopy Layer, The Understory, and the Forest Floor.Β  Different creatures and plant live in these separate layers.Β Β

The Emergent Layer is made up of the tallest trees its is windy. Not many animals live up there.Β Β

The Canopy Layer is the home for most of the rainforest creatures. Monkeys, birds, frogs, snakes and sloths will be found here because there are lots and lots of food.Β  It is very sheltered too and easy to stay hidden and camouflaged.Β

Β The Understory is very dull and plant and trees don’t grow so tall because they don’t get enough light or rain.Β  Lots of insects live here and bigger mammals like Jaguars and leopards will hunt the animals in the canopy from this layer to stay out of sight and take them by surprise.

Down on the forest floor there is very little light and so almost no plants could survive.Β  Fungi grows because they like dark damp conditions.Β Β

Rainforests are in danger of disappearing because of deforestation.Β  They are being cut down to make grazing land for farming.Β  This means that the animals, plants, and the local people are losing their homes.Β  Many medicines come from the rainforest and we might not to keep getting the ingredients if we destroy them.Β  We need to try to reduce, reuse, and recycle and to support green, eco-friendly and fairtrade products to try to save the planet.Β Β

The chat about favourite toys was very interesting. Matthew has a toy named after a character in one of my favourite books. It is called, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ and is by an author called Margery Williams.

The story was written almost 100 years ago in 1922, but it has been published many times with different illustrations.

Here is Matthew with his book and the toy rabbit which he called Alexander.
