There are more opportunities to learn outdoors this term which will help to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid 19 within classrooms. Please ensure your child comes to school ready to learn in all weather.

Summer Menu

The Summer menu was launched in the cafeteria this week. I would appreciate if you could remind your child(ren) of some of the changes to help them select a lunch they will enjoy everyday. The green menu option is always a vegan/vegetarian option. For example, the green menu on Thursday was sausage and potatoes however it is a vegan sausage and may taste a little different. The two hot options each day are one option containing meat and one without. The red tray is a cold option (baguette / pasta pot).

Charity Event

Each year we support local charities to encourage children to be kind and develop into responsible local citizens. This session, EK Food Bank, Salvation Army Christmas Appeal and Kilbryde Hospice are our charity partners.

In October we collected food for the local foodbank as part of the Harvest celebration. Thank you to all children and staff who supported this event. In December staff contributed to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal to ensure all children in East Kilbride woke up to presents on Christmas morning.

This term, we turn our attention to Kilbryde Hospice. Kilbryde Hospice provides compassionate, specialist palliative care to people with life limiting progressive illnesses and to their relatives and carers in South Lanarkshire.

The children in the school and nursery will all be invited to take part in a sponsored Sunflower Walk within the school grounds, This will be arranged to take into account Covid 19 restrictions at the time of the event. It will take place on Monday 24th May and is a fantastic start to Sports Week. There will be an opportunity to plant a sunflower seed for a small donation then bring the pot home and watch it grow over the Summer holiday.

The pupil House Captain team will contact local businesses to arrange water and fruit for the event.

Thank you to Miss Deans and Mrs Spence for organising this event.

PTC Fundraising Events

The restrictions of Covid 19 has made fundraising more difficult for the PTC as the normal events have not been able to go ahead. All funds raised by the PTC are used by the committee to directly benefit children and widen their experiences. As a school, we are very grateful for the support offered and it enables us to provide the children with resources and experiences that we could not afford using the core budget.

The PTC Scavenger Hunt raised £156. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The next event for PTC fundraising is the ‘Smarties Chore Challenge’. Each child will be given a tube of smarties by the PTC. Once the children have enjoyed the smarties, they are encouraged to do small chores around the house for some loose change to fill up the tube and then donate the money raised to the PTC. Children are welcome to fill it with a mix of any coin that fits inside the tube (1p, 5p etc) and there is no need for the tube to be filled on return. The PTC is very grateful for any donations that can be made.

If your child cannot eat smarties (special diet, food intolerance etc), please contact the school as soon as possible so that an alternative arrangement can be made.

Friends of Heathery Knowe Charity Setup

The PTC and staff are working collaboratively to explore the feasibility of setting up a ‘Friends of Heathery Knowe’ charity. This would allow access to fundraising opportunities where charity status is required. If you have previously served on the board of a registered charity, have experience setting up a charity or have knowledge of the process through work, we would really appreciate if you could contact Miss Wharton to offer some advice.

If you are interested in being part of the charity set up team, please let Miss Wharton know by emailing gw09whartonkimberley@glow.sch.uk

East Kilbride Litter Picking Group

The East Kilbride Litter Picking group has over 1200 members. Over the past 6 weeks the group has collected nearly 1000 large red bags of rubbish, you may have seen these filled bags on streets and parklands around East Kilbride.

If Covid restrictions allow, the school will support the campaign and participate in local litter picking as part of the ‘Great British Spring Clean’.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Kirsty Duff

The final term has got off to a very settled start with children engaging in a wide range of learning activities.
