Welcome to Heathery Knowe PS – Session 2022-2023

We are delighted to have welcomed everyone back to Heathery Knowe Primary School. I hope all our children and their families  enjoyed a restful summer break and feel refreshed and ready for the term ahead.

Leaving school at the end of the day

Parents can access the school grounds from 3pm to meet children exiting classes. Children in Primary 1 and 2 will be allowed to leave with an older sibling if the parent has telephoned the school to give permission. Otherwise, children in Primary 1 and 2 will not be allowed to leave without an adult.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast club runs daily from 8.15am – 8.45am.

Children arriving from 8.40am onwards will be offered toast to go.

School Lunch

Children can have a packed lunch, home lunch or school lunch each day.

If your child is a home lunch, please let the office know. P1-4 children need to be collected from the office for home lunches. P5-7 children will be allowed to walk home with parental permission.

Children in Primary 1-5 are entitled to a free school meal.  However, only children with a means tested benefit to school meals will receive free milk. It is 20p per day to buy milk.

ParentPay

Heathery Knowe PS is a cash free school. If you have any issues with your parent pay log in, please contact Mrs Rankin in the school office.

New Primary One parents will be provided with Parent Pay log in information at the start of term.

School Uniform

There is no change to the school uniform requirements for children at Heathery Knowe PS. Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled clearly.

The uniform consists of:

  • safe waterproof shoes that can be worn while playing and learning outdoors
  • grey trousers or skirt / pinafore
  • blue shirt or polo shirt
  • tie
  • grey or maroon cardigan or jumper.

The PE kit consists of:

  • dark coloured shorts
  • blue polo shirt / tee shirt
  • gym shoes

All children are asked to bring:

  • indoor shoes – This is normally their gym shoes which are worn each day. Indoor shoes must have a hard sole as they will be worn outdoors in the event of evacuation.
  • waterproofs-  Ideally a waterproof jacket, trousers and wellingtons. Some younger pupils may prefer a splash suit. Children will play outdoors on rainy days to ensure classrooms are ventilated and children have access to fresh air each day.
  • spare socks – Please pop a spare pair of socks into your child’s bag in case they are required.

Resources

  • Children should bring a school bag each day. The bag should be waterproof to ensure all resources are protected.
  • Children may bring a water bottle. Please ensure it is easy to fill and is clearly labelled with their name.
  • Hand sanitiser is available throughout the school. There is no need for your child to bring their own sanitiser to school.

Please note that no items of clothing, bags or pencil cases should promote  any football teams or display logos that may be offensive to others.

Staffing

Mrs French is taking a period of leave from work. Miss Wharton  has been appointed as Acting Depute Head Teacher and will undertake Mrs French’s remit. Miss Wharton will continue to teach Primary 7 (Room 10) on a part time basis alongside Miss Gayne who has been deployed  to Heathery Knowe PS until Mrs French is able to return.

Teachers in Scotland work directly with children for a maximum of 22.5 hours each week whilst children attend for 25 hours. This means all classes have more that one teacher over the course of the school week.

Small Group Teaching Mathematics and Numeracy

To raise attainment in Numeracy and Maths and provide the highest level of support in this area, Primary 3-7 children benefit from smaller group teaching in maths. Two teachers are allocated to each stage and P3-7 children participate in Numeracy and Mathematics from 9.15-10.30am.

Positive Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)

The PATHS® Programme for Schools is a universal, evidence-based, social and emotional learning schools programme for 4-11 year olds which empowers all children to develop the fundamental social and emotional learning skills which will enable them to make positive choices throughout life.

At Heathery Knowe Primary School, PATHS is taught across all stages (Primary 1-7) on a Tuesday at 11.45am. To ensure we continue to build friendships across year groups, we teach this according to stage rather than within classes.

PATHS groups are taught by the following teachers

Primary 1 – Mrs MacOwan and Mrs O’Sullivan (DHT)
Primary 2 – Miss Deans and Miss Houldsworth
Primary 3 – Mrs McGee and Miss Gayne
Primary 4 – Mrs Caldwell and Mrs French (covered by Miss Gayne)
Primary 5 – Mrs Spence and Mr Loveday
Primary 6 – Mrs Kane and Mrs Munn
Primary 7 – Miss Wharton and Miss Inglis
