Heathery Knowe Primary School and Nursery Class – 22nd April 2022

The children and staff returned from spring break refreshed and ready for the final term of learning. Although restrictions have eased further, the school is still taking steps to reduce the risk of Covid transmission and I appreciate your support with this.

Before the break, all families were issued with the summer calendar of events. This is also available at the end of this blog.

Sports Day

Primary 5-7 Sports afternoon will take place at the John Wright Sports Centre. Parents are able to attend and spectate and should follow the risk reduction measures of the sports centre.

Nursery – P2 Sports and P3/4 Sports will take place in the school grounds. Once the risk assessment is complete, I will advise parents if it is possible to attend the school events.

Parent Consultation

Parent Consultation appointments are planned to be in person, following strict risk reduction measures.  I appreciate your support in helping to keep everyone in the school community safe. Full guidance will be issued on 6th May however I can advise that the measures will include:

  • No waiting areas within the school building. Teachers will run as close to time as possible and parents are requested to arrive promptly at their allocated time.
  • Face coverings will be mandatory during parental appointments. Although the Scottish Government guidance is that wearing face coverings is optional, it will be essential during consultation meetings. If you are not able to wear a face covering, please let the school office know and a telephone appointment will be arranged.

Readathon

As you may know, the Readathon during World Book Day raised around £1,100 which was an incredible sum of money. Thank you to everyone who supported and participated in the Readathon.
We propose to spend the money on an outdoor ‘Reading Summer House’ for the children to enjoy a quiet cosy space to read a book outside during break and lunch time. It will be decorated with shelves, comfortable bean bags, cushions and blankets at a request from the children from the library questionnaire.
Some of the money will be spent on purchasing specific fiction book collections such as Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and non fiction books covering topics ranging from WW2, Oceans and Cars for our indoor library.  This was a request made by our learners during our reading questionnaire.
The remainder of the money will be spent on good quality games for our indoor library such as Scrabble, Articulate, Pictionary and so on.
A breakdown of the costs are as follows:

  • Reading summer house £800
  • Interior of summer house £150
  • Books and Games £150

Summer essentials

Children participate in outdoor learning throughout the day. In Summer, we request that all children bring a sun hat and sunscreen to school to use as required. This can be kept in their school bag or stored in the classroom.

If you have a summer parasol that fits into the middle of a picnic bench and no longer require it then we would really appreciate if it could be donated to school to create shadier areas. There are 15 picnic tables in the school grounds and we would like to be able to use a parasol for each table in the summer term.

Catering Menu – Summer 2022

The cost of a school meal has increased to £2. Milk remains at 20p per day.
