Creating our own rainforests – 30th November

On Friday, we worked in groups of 2 or 3 to create our own rainforests (terrariums).

We began by putting a layer of gravel in the bottom of a 2l plastic bottle which had been cut in half.  We then sprinkled charcoal over the stones.  This helps to keep the environment in the bottle healthy for the plants.  We then put a layer of compost on the top.  Next, we planted Lady Fern seeds, Grass seed tall fescue seeds, Cacti and succulent seeds.  We then added 100ml of water and placed the top half of the bottle to seal the bottle and recreate the rainforest environment.  Finally we filled out the first page of our Terrarium diary.

We can’t wait to watch what happens next!!!

News Reporters week commencing 3rd December

The news reporters this week are Milly and Skye.

Last week Angus brought us the story of the Taj Mahal in India which is apparently crumbling due to the effects of pollution and neglect.  The Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world and has had between 4-6 million visitors in the last 5 years. Once a bright white colour, it is now turning yellow due to the effects of acid rain.

Jack Gaffney reported on the mobile gaming industry.  27 million Brits play games on their mobiles and games are now the fifth most popular app that is downloaded.  Currently 90% of 16-24 year olds play games on their mobiles.

Thank you Angus and Jack for these very different but really interesting stories.

News Reporters week commencing 26th November

The news reporters this week are Jack Gaffney and Angus.

Last week Hollie brought us the story of a boy named Hunter in Africa who has befriended a baby rhino.  The reason for this is that rhinos are endangered because people have been cutting off their horns and making them into powder as it is believed that it contains special properties that heal people.

Thanks very much for this interesting story Hollie.
