Homework week commencing 27th November

Homework this week consists of:

  • Spelling – list for w/c 27th November
  • Reading – read an online book – see details below
  • Maths – rounding numbers – 1 worksheet

For spelling, follow the usual LSCWC, 1 activity from the inside cover and either the Spelling City or BIG IQ kids website (which was demonstrated in class to the children last week)

As part of Book Week Scotland (27th November – 3rd December), you need to go onto the website below and choose an online book to read.  There are two categories to choose from, ‘Books for young children’ and ‘Books for older children’.  Choose a book that you think best suits your ability.  Once you are finished, review it by writing it up in your Reading Passport :

Homework week commencing 20th November

Due to the shorter week and Parent’s night, the only homework this week is:

  • Spelling – LSCWC, 1 activity from the front inside cover, spelling city
  • Reading – read 10 minutes per night ( anything of your choosing)

We will be doing a tasting of rainforest foods on Friday.  If you wish, you can research some facts about which foods come from the rainforest.  This is however an optional task.

Teambuilding Task

Last week during teambuilding we tried to solve the Nine Cone Path problem in groups.  We haven’t managed to come up with the correct solution yet.  Can anyone crack it?  Here are a reminder of the rules below:

Nine Cone Path

Nine cones are laid out in a square grid. The objective is to lay the rope over so that the rope passes over the middle of every cone in the grid. The rope may only bend through an angle of no more than ninety degrees three times at most.

Homework week commencing 13th November

Homework this week is:

  • spelling
  • maths
  • reading passport activity

For spelling, we are back to the usual 10 words.  LCSWC your words 3 times in your homework jotter, choose 1 activity from the inside front cover of your jotter to do and input your words to Spelling City.

Maths is an addition task.

For your reading passport challenge, decide on 3 personal challenges and record them on page 4.  I have attached a document below to inspire you.   The challenges do not necessarily have to be completed right away, they are things that you are aiming to do before the challenge ends in May.  Please also make sure that you are doing 10 minutes reading at least per day and record any finished books in your reading passport.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THE READING PASSPORT IS NOT AN OPTIONAL TASK, IT IS PART OF YOUR HOMEWORK!!

News Reporters week commencing 13th November

The news reporters this week are Connor and Alex.

Last week, Abbie created a fabulous Power Point about Storm Nate in America which originated in Louisiana.  She finished her presentation with a quiz which we all enjoyed.  Daniel brought us a really interesting story about how a new species of orangutan has been discovered.  This is the first new species of great apes to be discovered in 100 years. Well done Daniel and Abbie!

Homework week commencing 6th November

Homework this week consists of:

  • Spelling
  • Maths
  • Reading Passport

Spelling homework this week is a bit different than normal.  On Friday you will be tested on a random selection of 20 words from the last 8 weeks spelling words.  Spend time revising the rules and focusing particularly on those words which you got incorrect in the tests.  Make use of your homework jotter, the strategies on the inside front cover and Spelling City to help you prepare for the test.

There is one maths homework sheet based on addition.

For your reading challenge, choose ONE of the articles below to read and then record it on page 7 of your reading passport.  One article is more challenging than the other so please choose the article which you feel best suits your ability:

Frogs and Climate Change

Your Reading Passport should also be a record of all of the books you read between now and next May so each time you finish a home lending book or personal book, then record it in your passport.

Project 31 event on Friday 3rd November

Today we visited Cambuslang Public Park.  We learned that Cambuslang Park dates back to 1913 and in 2013 celebrated its 100th year birthday! There was previously a glass house in the park but in the1970s, it, along with other things in the park, fell into disrepair.  We also learned that there used to be a quarry in which stone known as Cambuslang marble was mined.  Here are some pictures of us on our guided tour by Project 31!

If you can think of any other facts we learned today or would like to comment on your visit then please reply to this post.

Homework week commencing 30th October

There will be no maths homework this week as I know that the children will be busy at night with various Halloween activities.  For spelling this week, follow the word list for 30th October and the usual format (LSCWC, 1 activity from the list, Spelling city).

Hallside has signed up again for the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.  This challenge runs from now until 2nd May 2018 and will involve the children undertaking reading challenges both in school and at home.  For further information, feel free to look on the following website:

As part of their homework, the children have brought home their Reading Passport which will be used to record their activities in school and at home.  They should complete page 1 and 3 of their Passport this week and submit it with their other homework on Friday.  It is important that the children keep their Passport in their bag at all times.
