Caterpillar watch

Hello room 6!

Look at how big our caterpillar friends have gotten over the last week. They are now 3cm long and very active. They wriggle and move around their tub, eating and growing constantly! As you can see there is silk thread all over the tub too. This is what the caterpillars will wrap around themselves to make a cocoon. They produce this themselves. I will take a photo as soon as they have done this. I think it will be quite soon  now.

Lottie is very interested in them. Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than us humans and she can smell them! We can’t smell a thing from them! Quite often she’s on her hind legs trying to see what these strange creatures are in the tub and we have had to put them up high so that she can’t get them.

This is officially the last week of school, and so I won’t upload any more Studyladder.

We have learned lots about In our Under the sea topic.

  • We began by naming the 5 oceans of the world  and placing them on a world map.
  • We looked at the different oceanic zones, and were able to describe the characteristics of each zone as well as their names.
  • We learned about what creatures live in each zone and why.
  • We had opportunities to make various sea themed crafts when we watched Let’s go Live.
  • We created PowerPoint presentations/ leaflets about a sea creature of our choice.
  • We learned about life-cycles of various creatures both on land and in the sea.
  • We investigated food chains and created our own.  Wow Room 6 you are all officially experts in all things Ocean related! I’m very proud of you all for taking part in so many of these activities. I hope you all have a fabulous holiday and am looking forward to seeing you back in school in August! Mrs Mirner 🐠🐠

Under the Sea 15.06.20

Good morning Room 6!

I got a lovely surprise in the post on Friday! What feels like ages ago now, I ordered some baby caterpillars online for us to observe and they finally arrived on Friday. There must’ve been a hold up due to everything being on lockdown, but finally they have arrived! I ordered them so that we could observe the life-cycle of a butterfly since we have been thinking about life-cycles in our topic. They have already doubled in size since Friday as they are very busy munching on the caterpillar food in their container. I will keep you updated with weekly photos. They aren’t likely to turn into butterflies until during the summer holidays, but I will keep posting here. We have 5 in total. Can anyone think of some names for them? They measure about 1cm today. I wonder what they will measure this time next week?

This week in our Under the Sea topic, Im asking you to think about food chains.Watch this short clip explaining what a food chain is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuKs9o1s8h8

Now lets think about food chains in the ocean. What do you think will be at the bottom of the food chain?  ie, what is eaten by ocean creatures but doesn’t eat anything? (Have a guess!) What kind of creatures do you think are at the top of the food chain in the ocean?

Have a look at this PowerPoint about food chains in the ocean. It asks you to sort cards that you can print off – but you could always draw or write the name of sea creatures on paper rather than printing if you don’t have access to a printer.

You can use the template on the PP to make your own oceanic food chains, and please share them with me!

t-t-252863-under-the-sea-food-chains-powerpoint_ver_3

Key words to know and understand are: herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. Which one are we humans? Where are humans in any food chain?

If you are interested in food chains and predators then have a look at the national geographic: https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/primary-resource/predators-primary-resource/

As you have probably noticed, the National Geographic Kids website is one of my favourite sources of information for things related to the natural world. Not everything you read on the internet is reliable, but this website is super.

As always, well done on all your effort in Study Ladder! I will organise work for the last time this week on it, as this is our last full week of term. (I can’t believe it!) Who is going to complete every activity I have set on Study Ladder? There’s a wee challenge for you : ) All the teachers are getting ready for  the children to come back to school in August, and we can’t wait to see you all in person and hear all your chatter once more.

One last thing. If you see me out and about please say hello! I might not know all of your faces since I haven’t been teaching in your classroom, but I know all of your names and have enjoyed getting messages and emails from all of you at some time or another. I think I may have seen someone smiling at me on Viewpark Drive last week when I was out with Arran, Ena and Lottie. I wondered if it was one of you? Give me a wee shout and a wave if you know me. We are always out on walks round Burnside.

Have a great week room 6. Work hard, play hard and keep smiling!!!

Weekly Check-in

Good morning Room 6,

I hope you’re all keeping ok. Whilst I was making breakfast this morning, Lottie made me laugh. Here she is, working from home 🐶. I hope she managed to get a lot done!

This week we have enjoyed doing some home baking, Mr Mirner likes making pizzas and we’ve been having some fun with different toppings.

We enjoyed looking in the rock pool on the world oceans page, but it made us really want to go to our favourite place – the island of Arran so that we could experience rock pooling in real life once more!

Your fantastic PowerPoint presentations inspired me to make one of my own. I’ve made a quiz for my friends this weekend using power point. Have any of you designed a quiz for your family? Power point is especially good for making picture rounds, like guess the place or celebrity. I used the  cropping function to do a “name that chin” round where the contestants only see the chin of a famous person and have to guess who it is. I bet you could make a fantastic quiz based on our “Under the Sea” topic by now!

Please say hello in the comments below. Mrs Graham and I are missing being in school with you all and look forward to hearing from you. Don’t worry if you don’t have much news. Just say hi, or give us a 👋.

Take care, and keep smiling!

Mrs Mirner 🐠

Weekly Check in 4/06/20

Good Morning Room 6!

I hope you and your families are all keeping well and enjoying some of the activities from this week. Please say “hello” to us in the comments below – we love hearing from you all – even if its just to say “hi”.

Mrs Graham and I are very proud of all of you and we are really enjoying seeing some of the work you have been doing on the Under the Sea topic.

Have a look at these amazing Power Point presentations made by Ros and Julia. Ros has researched the fascinating sea horse, and Julia has been visiting Holmhills Park, which inspired her to make a presentation about the lifecycle of a tadpole, since we are looking at lifecycles this week. Well done to both of you.

Home learning – Under the Sea 1/06/20

Good Morning Room 6,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend enjoying the sunshine. Maybe some of you have been able to meet up with some friends or family outside.  We stayed up late last night looking up to the sky to see if we could spot the rocket that was launched from the USA, and heading towards the International Space Station. We didn’t see it unfortunately, but Arran and Ena went to bed knowing that there were astronauts flying overhead in a rocket in space, and that in itself was really exciting. Did any of you spot it?

Well done to you all for your super progress on Study Ladder. I can see you are working very hard and I am very proud of all of you.

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm for our Under the Sea Topic. As always, please send any photos or PowerPoints to me on gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, we are still thinking about Sea Creatures and looking at Life Cycles. Some sea creatures are mammals, like us. They are known as “marine mammals”.  This means that they give birth to live young, breath air and feed their babies with their own milk. There are around 120 species of marine mammals, including whales, dolphins, porpoises, polar bears, seals and sealions.

However, most sea creatures are what we call “oviparous” – which means they lay eggs rather than giving birth to live young. This week, I’d like you to explore the life cycle of one of these “oviparous” creatures. A sea reptile – the amazing Sea Turtle.

Have a look at the Power point about the fascinating life cycle of a sea turtle.

T-T-5280-Sea-Turtle-Life-Cycle-Powerpoint-V_ver_2 (1)

Complete the worksheet, or draw your own Sea Turtle lifecycle.

sea turtle life cycle

If you want, you can make your own booklet explaining the life cycle of the sea turtle. Use sentences to describe each phase, Remember capital letters and full stops. Try to make your booklet as interesting as possible by using good vocabulary (words) at you might not usually use. make sure you keep the reader interested by starting each sentence in a new way. (not always “the”) The link below has a template booklet

If you want to know more about sea turtles, have a look here:

Have fun exploring lifecycles. Other interesting lifecycles to research include butterflies and frogs.

Keep smiling room 6!

Home learning (Under the Sea) 25/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

From now until the end of term you’ll receive 2 weekly task posts at the beginning of the week. I’m going to keep Study Ladder updated and provide Under the Sea activities. Mrs Graham will provide additional literacy, maths and fun activities.

Well done to all of you for such a fantastic effort with your tasks last week. As you know, I asked you to research a sea creature of your choice and create a fact file or PowerPoint about it. Jack H sent me his brilliant Power Point all about coral. I was so impressed with the professional lay out and the super content! Have a look at it: The amazing world of Coral

As always if any of you have photos to share with me I’d love to see them. Email me at gw16mirnererica@glow.sch.uk

This week, I’d like you to keep thinking about the different creatures we can find in the sea. I have included some fact cards to read and questions about them. You don’t have to print them off if a printer isn’t available – just write the answers on a piece of paper or answer them orally to your sibling or grown up.

Sea Creatures Fact Cards                Sea Creatures Questions and Answers

In our house we have been busy with the Let’s Go Live Oceans week “makes”. If you are looking for under the sea science based craft activities then you’ll find loads there.  They are great fun and can usually be made with things you’ll have in your house. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=maddie+moate+let%27s+go+live

I have updated your Study Ladder as usual and  recommend one session of about 30 minutes each day. I continue to be extremely impressed with your efforts Room 6. Keep it up and keep smiling,

Mrs Mirner : )

Home learning 18/05/20

Good Morning Room 6,

Welcome back to another week of home learning! I’m so proud of you all for the level of engagement over the last few weeks Room 6. I have to admit boys and girls that my favourite topics are Ancient Egypt  and Under the Sea!  There is so much to discover. I have to give a shout out to Sophia who appeared on Lets Go Live with her knitted sea creatures. What a claim to fame Sophia! Could you please share a photo with us? Please share any photos with me of the “makes” you have so cleverly made boys and girls, Mrs Graham and I would love to see them. Below is a photo of Ena’s diorama. She said she wanted to make a bedroom for a mermaid. She did it all by herself and wanted to share it with you.

My wee girl Ena, (5) made this ocean diorama, inspired by Maddie & Greg o Go Live. She said it’s a mermaid’s bedroom 🧜🏻‍♀️

Mrs Graham has been very busy writing reports for you all as you know and from next week we are going to be sharing the Monday blog again. I’ll keep Studyladder  and Easi-maths updated and give you “Under the Sea” activities, and Mrs graham will plan some literacy, numeracy and fun activities. We will both be here for you to leave comments.

Enjoy your week Room 6,

Mrs Mirner : )

Literacy

Another lovely resource from Talk  4 Writing. Work through this at your own pace

Numeracy

  • Access DK 10 minute a day app to practise your tables
  • Visit easi-maths on your glow page and complete 3x 20 minute sessions.
  • Go onto Studyladder and complete some of the number activities.

Under the Sea

This week I’d like to focus on some of the wonderful creatures we can find in our oceans.  One of my favourites is the sea turtle.  The National geographic kids website is a great source for facts, information and activities. This week I’d like you to explore the website, go on a sea creature fact finding mission! Below is the direct link to the Sea Turtle page, but down the right, you will find lots of other sea creatures to discover.

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/sea-life/turtle-facts/

Choose a sea creature that interests you and create a fact-file about it. You could do this on paper or using power-point. Include information about where it lives (which zone, where in the world) What does it eat, how does it survive  and what does it look like? Feel free to use other websites or any books you have.

I’ m sure many of you already know that this week Maddie and Gregg are doing programmes about the Science Behind Magic. We are quite excited to watch and  do some of the makes they come up with this week.  Arran and Ena still have lots of Under the Sea makes to complete from last weeks shows too.

Maddie Moate & Check in

Hi Room 6,

Who is watching Maddie Moate every day for her Oceans Week shows? It’s absolutely brilliant! They also give great ideas for Ocean themed crafts. Have any of you made some of the things she suggests? Please share photos of your crafts below. Or email them to me. We plan to make the sharks mouths and the Diorama. If you haven’t already watched you can catch up on YouTube. Please use this as our weekly check in station too.

Hope you’re all safe, well and enjoying some of the activities.
