Teaching the Early Years about Germs!

We had a great time working with the Early Years earlier in the week – teaching them about handwashing. Thank you to Abby and Zac for their reports.

On Wednesday the 18th the P6/7 class taught the Early Years about washing hands and about germs in the classroom. We were teaching them about germs to show them if they forget to wash their hands with soap and water then they might get sick.

Then we got into small groups a mixture of Early Years and P6/7. Then we got a tray and we filled it half way up with water. We put a shake of pepper in the tray and then we added a squirt of soap in. The pepper moved to the side of the tray and made the water look clean. The Early Years were amazed that this had happened. Next we moved on to straw painting.

In our groups we got some straws, paper and paint and mixed the paint with water. We used red, blue, green, purple and yellow. Then we helped the Early Years splodge a little blob of paint onto paper and we blew through the straws onto the wet paint. It spread out in weird shapes. After that we stuck on googly eyes to make them look like germ monsters. The Early Years enjoyed doing this.

At the end we taught them how to wash their hands after using the paint when their hands were dirty and then we taught them how to walk sensibly up the corridor back to the Early Years.

Germs! (With the Early Years)

Today the early years came to the p6/7 classroom so that we could teach them about germs and washing your hands.

First we got the Early Years to stand around a row of A4 paper. Mrs Lawson squirted some water to see how far you would sneeze. The Early Years seemed to like and thought it was funny.

Next we got them go spilt in 4 groups. We had Isla W, Chloe, Esme and Archie. Then we did an experiment to see how germs reacted to soap. First, we filled a tray with water halfway full. Next we sprinkled some Pepper on the water. Then Mrs Lawson squirted some soap on the pepper. The early years thought it was amazing!

We then went to the Art room and made germs with paint; we mixed up paint and water and put it on the paper, then they got a straw and blew the paint so that it gave it a cool effect! Then we stuck on some googly eyes.

Finally we took the early years to the bathroom and helped them to wash their hands. We had a great time working with the Early Years and they liked it too!
