Anderson Shelters

Our project this term is War and Conflict. We are learning about WW2 at the minute. This week we have been researching and planning Anderson Shelters and today we have been busy turning our plans into models. A small group have been working on building a much bigger shelter for the classroom. We have all had very different ideas. Some of us have come across some problems along the way and some have stuck to their plans.

  • Some of the resources we wanted to use were a bit too fancy so we have covered them in cloth to make them look better.
  • I tried to stick muscovado sugar onto the roof but it didn’t stick so we decided to put brown paper underneath and see if that works.
  •  We joined with a group to help each other.
  • Ours has gone a bit lop sided but we are trying to find a way to make it stay up.
  • Our back wall wouldn’t stick so we used masking tape to tape over it. It stays up now.
  • Our base is taking longer to dry than we thought.
  • With our one the lollipop sticks kept breaking because we put them in water to soften them up. so we are trying to think about what to do.
  • When we were painting the big Anderson shelter it wouldn’t stay up. We got metre sticks and duct tape to support it. Jack suggested that we put chairs inside to help hold it up.

We have had to problem solve, use our time usefully, use creativity and work well as a team.

We have had a look at all of the finished shelters and think that we would feel safest and comfiest in Jules and Ruby’s shelter.

The big shelter needs a bit more work so the whole class will add parts to it over the next few weeks.
