{"id":6083,"date":"2023-11-14T15:07:45","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T15:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/?p=6083"},"modified":"2023-11-14T15:09:15","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T15:09:15","slug":"elc-information-session-and-literacy-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/2023\/11\/14\/elc-information-session-and-literacy-event\/","title":{"rendered":"ELC Information session and Literacy Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Thursday afternoon, the ELC and Primary hosted an ELC information session followed by a Literacy event for parents and pupils.<\/p>\n<p><u>ELC Information Session<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Lynsey shared information on the routines of the nursery, how children\u2019s needs are met through play, the role of the adults in observing and assessing the children as well as information on our recent Care Inspectorate visit.<\/p>\n<p>Living in a small community, staff are aware of misconceptions people hold in relation to nursery.\u00a0 Lynsey took this opportunity to discuss some of these misconceptions, explaining the value of a play environment in ensuring pupils needs are met in a stimulating, motivating environment whilst covering the early level of a Curriculum for Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Parents had the opportunity to look through the floorbook and discuss the extensive learning opportunities recorded as well as look through their child\u2019s learning story.\u00a0 Both these are accessible to parents at all times in the nursery for parents\/carers to look through and staff are always on-hand to discuss the learning further.<\/p>\n<p><u>Literacy Event<\/u><\/p>\n<p>During inservice Pauline, Lynsey, Jayne and Elizabeth Nisbet met with some parents to organise the Literacy event. This was useful as it gave us an idea of what information and resources parents would like to find out more about.<\/p>\n<p><u>Early Literacy<\/u><\/p>\n<p>When pupils enter nursery, they begin the early level of a Curriculum for Excellence with the aim to achieve it by the end of Primary 1.\u00a0 In nursery, a key focus is to develop the pupil\u2019s gross and fine motor skills to support them with the scissor skills, pencil grip and, ultimately, writing.\u00a0 A selection of activities to develop fine motor skills were on display and handouts for parents to take away.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6088\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/11\/14143403\/IMG_6649-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/11\/14143403\/IMG_6649-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/11\/14143403\/IMG_6649-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/11\/14143403\/IMG_6649-rotated.jpg 945w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Phonics and Spelling<\/u><\/p>\n<p>When we met with parents, one thing asked was \u2018how do I pronounce phonics correctly?\u2019 Using the correct pronunciation is important as children are learning the phonetic sound in school rather than the letter name. Children are using their phonetic knowledge to spell so it is important to keep the consistency between home and school. For additional information about Phonics and Spelling at home, including how to pronounce phonics correctly, please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/11\/14145133\/Phonics-and-Spelling-Help-Sheet.pdf\">Phonics and Spelling Help Sheet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Class teachers were on hand to show the progression of literacy resources and activities throughout primary. For pupils progressing through early level, resources were set out to show how phonics can be taught actively including writing in sand, using blend wheels and support for letter formation.\u00a0 At the middle and upper stages, games and activities to support spelling and reading, including a keyboard poppit, Boggle, Bananagrams as well as active spelling cards. These books allow pupils to use their phonetic knowledge to read, therefore reinforcing the links between phonics, spelling and reading. We hope that it gave parents information about Accelerated Reader and answered their questions, for anyone who missed the event, the display boards will be up for a few weeks if anyone would like to look the next time they are in school or you can read the blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/information-for-parents\/accelerated-reading\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><u>Scottish Book Bags<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Every year pupils from P1-3 receive book bags from the Scottish Book Trust, each bag contains books and activities to support literacy skills at home.
