{"id":6051,"date":"2023-10-26T09:15:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T09:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/?p=6051"},"modified":"2023-10-26T09:15:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T09:15:55","slug":"6051","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/2023\/10\/26\/6051\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology Week 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6054\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091111\/Bio-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091111\/Bio-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091111\/Bio-2-rotated.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>S2 Pupils in Whalsay school have been celebrating the important and amazing world of the biosciences during Biology Week 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Three questions were posed and various science techniques were used to help them understand the answers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do leave change colour in Autumn?\u00a0 <\/strong>This involved a practical where the pupils used Chromatography to separate the pigments in leaves.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The results showed that there are orange and yellow pigments present, as well as the overpowering green pigment, Chlorophyll.\u00a0 In Autumn, chlorophyll disappears first leaving the orange and yellow pigments in full view.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6057 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091116\/Bio-3-e1698311644271-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091116\/Bio-3-e1698311644271-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091116\/Bio-3-e1698311644271.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do snails and slugs need slime?\u00a0 <\/strong>Snails and slug slime is made of water and glycoproteins which make up a non-Newtonian fluid.\u00a0 This is the same type of fluid as \u201coobleck\u201d (water and cornflour mixture). When snail\u2019s foot presses down hard on their slime it provides a hard surface to press against; when the foot relaxes the slime turns into liquid, making it easier for the slug\/snail to glide across.\u00a0 Pupils had great fun making oobleck and then pretending their fingers were snails.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6053 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091110\/Bio-6-rotated-e1698311608256-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091110\/Bio-6-rotated-e1698311608256-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091110\/Bio-6-rotated-e1698311608256.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do butterflies drink?\u00a0 <\/strong>Some of the pupils already knew about the straw-like mouthpart of butterflies and flies.\u00a0 This practical looked at capillary action, examining how the different widths (or bores) of a tube, affects how high fluid in the tube will rise.\u00a0 The conclusion was that the smaller the tube bore the higher the fluid will rise against gravity.\u00a0 Who knew a drinking butterfly was so scientific?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6055\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091113\/Bio-5-e1698311666891-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091113\/Bio-5-e1698311666891-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2023\/10\/26091113\/Bio-5-e1698311666891.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are loads of other activities and fun facts detailed on the Royal Society of Biology website if you fancy doing more of these at home J <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsb.org.uk\/getinvolved\">www.rsb.org.uk\/getinvolved<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; S2 Pupils in Whalsay school have been celebrating the important and amazing world of the biosciences during Biology Week 2023.
