The commonest sorts of things that affect children in school are coughs, colds and sore throats; chickenpox; diarrhoea and vomiting bugs; hand, foot and mouth disease; threadworms and headlice.<\/p>\n<p>There is lots of information about prevention and treatment :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NHS Inform website (use the A-Z Guide) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\">www.nhsinform.scot\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>NHS Shetland \u2018Self help\u2019 Guide. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shb.scot.nhs.uk\/community\/documents\/NHSShetland-SelfHelpGuide.pdf\">http:\/\/www.shb.scot.nhs.uk\/community\/documents\/NHSShetland-SelfHelpGuide.pdf<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pharmacists are a great source of information, and there are some treatments for children that you can get for free, without a prescription, under the \u2018Minor Ailments\u2019 Scheme, including paracetamol, ibuprofen and headlice treatment.<\/p>\n<p>It can be difficult to prevent infections spreading, especially amongst younger children, but really good handwashing can help with things like stomach bugs, coughs and colds, and threadworms.<\/p>\n<p>How long should children stay off school for?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coughs, colds and sore throats &#8211; children should stay off if they are poorly.<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhoea and vomiting &#8211; whilst they have symptoms and for 48 hours <strong>AFTER the first normal stool and the last episode of vomiting<\/strong>, even if symptoms have stopped and they feel well.<\/li>\n<li>Chickenpox &#8211; five days after onset of rash, until crusted over, and child is well.<\/li>\n<li>Hand, foot and mouth disease \u2013 children should stay off if they are unwell.<\/li>\n<li>Headlice\u2013 don\u2019t need to stay off school but should be treated by wet combing or medicated lotion.<\/li>\n<li>Threadworms &#8211; don\u2019t need to stay off school but should be treated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please see links below for further advice:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2026\/02\/27113626\/2024-04-child-off-school-a4.pdf\">2024-04-child-off-school-a4<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/whalsayschoolweb\/uploads\/sites\/2585\/2026\/02\/27113640\/DV-information-leaflet-2025.pdf\">DV information leaflet 2025<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bugs Bugs Bugs It sometimes feels like there are always bugs going around.
