{"id":113,"date":"2017-11-16T14:58:44","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T14:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/?page_id=113"},"modified":"2025-09-10T07:41:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T07:41:22","slug":"physical-education","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/secondary\/health-and-wellbeing\/physical-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Teacher: <\/strong> Ms E Spence and Ms. C.Cheyne<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/secondary2425\/uploads\/sites\/3581\/2025\/09\/04135006\/PE-Curriculum-Outline.pdf\">PE Curriculum Outline<\/a> &#8211; Primary and Secondary PE &#8211; Term 1 (2025-26)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facilites:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whalsay Leisure Centre including swimming pool, games hall, squash court and fitness suite.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Learning Experiences:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In both S3 &amp; S4 the theoretical principles and other demands associated with the courses will be taught through practical activities where appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>In S3 learners will participate in a wide range of physical activities providing in turn a solid basis for working towards National Qualifications in S4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Senior Phase<\/strong> \u2013 This begins in S4 during which you will undertake National Qualifications at either National 4 or National 5 level (These are new qualifications introduced by the Scottish Qualifications Authority which roughly equate to Foundation\/General and Credit levels respectively at Standard Grade).<\/p>\n<p>By the end of S4 learners will have had the opportunity to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practise and refine actions.<\/li>\n<li>Devise and create movements.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in practical investigation.<\/li>\n<li>Observe and report on skills and techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Assess self and peers.<\/li>\n<li>Meet challenges.<\/li>\n<li>Adopt different roles.<\/li>\n<li>Co-operate and compete with a partner or group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Core PE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All learners will undertake two compulsory periods of PE per week. This course in many respects mirrors the S3 Course leading to Certification at N4 or N5.<\/p>\n<p>It is a broad based course offering a wide range of activities that satisfy CfE Experiences and Outcomes at Level 4.<\/p>\n<p>All of the course is practical and encourages participation and personal performance progression.<\/p>\n<p>Any\/all assessments are informal in nature and would be used by the learner to improve their own performance level.<\/p>\n<p>Activities included are: Lacrosse, Badminton, Team Games, Creative\/Ethnic Dance, Basketball, Volleyball, Fitness, Athletics, Trampolining, and, Racquet Sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extra Curricular Activities 2025-26<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Secondary Hockey (Mondays)<\/p>\n<p>Primary Dance (Tuesdays)<\/p>\n<p>The key objective of our after school clubs is to develop confidence, build transferable skills and promote lifelong learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>School Sports Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2025-26, we are launching a new sports committee! This group will be up and running towards the end of term one.
