S3 Health & Food Technology Achievements

In Term 2, S3 took part in a FIDA (Futures Institute at Dollar Academy) project, which linked our classwork in Health & Food Technology, about contemporary issues which affect our choice of food, with COP26.

The project, My Community, My food,  raised understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2- Zero Hunger.

This gave pupils the opportunity to learn more about the foods produced in our local area and to create an original, sustainable meal from local ingredients as well as encouraging independent learning.

They had to think about the impact of food miles on the environment, learned more about the Local Food Movement initiative, researched foods that grew within 100 miles of Whalsay and then created their own recipe using these foods, with video tips along the way from a former MasterChef finalist.

Pupils were able to make good use of the apples we had grown in the school polytunnel, as well as Shetland butter, milk, beef, vegetables and cream.

They then had to submit an annotated sketch of their dish before cooking it.  The sketches really showed off their artistic skills:

REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene Course

Pupils have also successfully completed Food Hygiene training and achieved the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) Elementary Food Hygiene certificate at SCQF Level 5.
