Last week, our pupils took part in the ‘Lamb for St. Andrew’s Day’ initiative, organised by the Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland (I.A.A.S.) and Quality Meat Scotland.
The aim was for every single Home Economics pupil in Scotland to have the chance to cook with Scottish lamb around the 30th November.
In fact, 180 schools and over 30,000 home economics pupils signed up to cook and eat 3,000kg of Scotch Lamb for St Andrews Day!
Our lamb was provided by the Shetland Livestock Marketing Group and pupils in S1 – S4 used it to make one of two recipes which were chosen by Quality Meat Scotland.
S1 and S2 pupils made Lamb Wrap with squashed garlicky peas , which used lamb leg steak.
S3 and S4 Health & Food Technology pupils used minced lamb, Scottish porridge oats and a Waas Bakery bun to make an Oaty Lamb Burger.
Pupils enjoyed preparing both recipes ( though some were less keen on eating peas than others!); developing their practical skills as well as consolidating learning about local produce, seasonality, food miles and sustainability.
