Our Secondary footballers had a great day out at Clickimin today for the inter schools football competition that took place a bit later in the session than normal due to the pandemic. Our squad of 14 players had a good mixture of new S2s, S3s and S4s and were captained by Ian (S3). Euan (old S4) had come along for the trip to help organise the team but ended up joining in on the playing side. All of our squad enjoyed minutes on the pitch and acquitted themselves well throughout the day. They started with a 2-0 win over Sandwick, followed by a 0-0 draw with Brae. Their next two games were against eventual finalists AHS1 and AHS2 and they competed well but narrowly lost out 1-0 in both games. They then enjoyed two impressive 1-0 victories over North Isles and Aith which was enough to see them into the 3rd/4th play off match. Scorers for Whalsay in the group games were Mackie, Robbie, Euan and Andy. Andy’s was the pick of the bunch – a long range effort from outside the box that flew into the top corner. Greig was outstanding in goals, making crucial saves in each game. The 3rd/4th match was against North Isles who were looking for revenge after their result against Whalsay in the group match had cost them a place in the final. There was nothing between the two sides and the match went to a penalty shoot out. Mackie, Euan and Ian all kept their composure to convert their penalties and Whalsay won the shoot-out 3-2 to take third place. Congratulations to the eventual winners (AHS2) and many thanks to Danny and Jack from Active Schools for organising a great day.
