{"id":1355,"date":"2019-01-14T13:22:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T13:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/?p=1355"},"modified":"2023-01-17T22:12:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T22:12:46","slug":"dementia-friends-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolarchiveposts\/2019\/01\/14\/dementia-friends-scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia Friends Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1356 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/whalsayschoolweb\/files\/2019\/01\/Dementia_Friends_-_stock_image_landing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"143\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pupils in S1 and S2 recently completed Dementia Friends Scotland, led by Laura Whittal and Ann Williamson from the Shetland Dementia Resource Centre.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of a social action movement to increase awareness of dementia and to address the stigma experienced by many people living with the illness.<\/p>\n<p>Laura and Ann helped pupils to understand the 5 key messages of Dementia Friends Scotland:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dementia is not a natural part of ageing<\/li>\n<li>Dementia is caused by brain disease<\/li>\n<li>Dementia is not just about losing your memory<\/li>\n<li>It is possible to live well with dementia<\/li>\n<li>There is more to the person than the dementia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pupils were then presented with a Dementia Friends badge, helping to raise further awareness of this illness, which touches many of our lives. \u00a0We plan to train S3 pupils this term.
