S3 Biologists are currently doing a topic on transport systems in the body. One aspect of this is learning about the heart, its valves and associated vessels, as well as its close connection with the lungs.
Often seeing something in real life helps you to understand and remember things better. With this in mind the enthusiastic pupils decided they wanted to do a heart dissection to see these structures for themselves.
Each group dissected a sheep’s heart. There was also one set of lungs, complete with a diaphragm and attached heart for close examination. The pupils all got stuck in and were soon removing heart valves, cutting up major vessels and comparing all the different types of tissues and structures present.
