Sport’s Day 2024
Here we are doing our best at Sport’s Day. We had lots of races – including the egg and spoon, and the sack race. We finished off with our favourite – The Tug ‘o’ War!

Today P3/4 have been learning about how our characteristics are inherited. The children individually created playdough monsters and then paired up to create offspring that shared the parental traits. This led to interesting discussions about inheritance in their families and characteristics that are shared with other family members. P4 developed this further by looking at trait variation and created more offspring for their monsters with varied inherited traits. It was a fun way to learn about a difficult concept.

Our topic this term is all about ‘The Body’ We have been learning about our skeleton and the functions of some of our organs. This week we focused on the digestive system. We discovered that the mouth is the first part of the ‘food journey’ through our bodies, and we learned about the jobs our teeth and tongue have. Next we looked at how we swallow food and where it goes – the stomach, then into the small intestine and large intestine – taking all the nutrients we need before the bits we don’t need exit the body.
We then carried out a practical experiment showing the digestive system ‘in action’ using a plastic bag to represent the stomach, the leg of a pair of tights to represent the intestines and a large tray to represent our bodies. Firstly we had the mulch up crackers and a banana in our plastic ‘stomach’ adding orange juice (stomach acid) and some water (saliva). Once the food had been turned into ‘soup’ we poured it into our ‘intestine’ – the ‘nutrients’ came through the wall of the ‘intestine’ into our bodies, and the waste was squeezed out of the bottom to show what happens when the bits we don’t need exit the body. The experiment was a lot of fun and VERY messy.

Our BSL interpreter, Sula, has been in our class since January. We have really enjoyed our time with Sula as she has helped us learn how to sign. We decided to hold a ‘surprise’ party for her on her last day with us. We wanted to thank her for being such a big help to us all. We will miss you Sula.
Here are some photos of our party:

To finish off our mini topic on Electricity, P34 have made buzz wire games.
They had to use the components and the knowledge they had learned over the past few weeks to build a game.
Here are some pictures of their work-

P3/4 had good fun taking part in the Voar Redd Up. We tidied up around the Whalsay Leisure Centre and the grassy areas around the car park. We found lots of litter and we are all going to make more effort to put our rubbish in the bin!

P34 were investigating building electrical circuits. We used an energy ball to see how electricity could ‘flow’ through us to make a giant human circuit! The children then used components and wires to build simple loop (series) circuits to investigate how to use switches and the difference made by using one or two cells (batteries). It was a very enjoyable lesson and some children chose to use the resources during this weeks Friday fun.
