Technology through the ages.

As part of our topic on ‘Technology through the ages’ we looked at the invention of the telephone.

We learned about the life of Alexander Graham Bell  including where he lived and when he was born. We discovered that he invented the telephone in 1876 with the help of his assistant Thomas Watson.

We made string telephones to see how the sound vibrations can pass from one person to another.

We discovered that when one person talks their cup vibrates, the sound energy from these vibrations passes along the string into the second cup which also vibrates. These vibrations pass through the air particles into our partner’s ear and they can actually hear what we are saying!

We experimented by using longer pieces of string, by whispering, by leaving the string ‘loose’ instead of ‘tight’ to see if there were any differences.

P4 Outdoor Maths

Today the P4s got together to complete some maths work outside. We worked in pairs and we had a sheet with lots of different questions on it.

Firstly we had to find right angles, and shapes in our environment,next  we had to time how long it took us to walk around the school – then estimate how long it would take us to walk round three times.

We also had to work out some fractions and find examples of tiling and symmetry.

We had to measure using strides and hand spans – we worked out that our answers were different because we have different sizes of hands and strides.

It was interesting to try to use our maths skills in different places, some of the questions we found quite easy but others were more tricky. We were glad that we were working in pairs this time!

On Tuesday  21st May  we had a STEM workshop with Emma.  At first we watched a video  about not throwing away plastic because it affects wildlife and the air. Then  we spoke about jobs and more, and how ROVs can clean salmon cages. After that we went into the canteen and tried programing Lego mind storm robots. I was in a pair  with Joe but our robot didn’t  work so we got a new one and it worked.

First we  had to try and make our robot move in a square but we couldn’t do it, it was tricky to programme the robots with the Ipads! Then we had to put a piece of Lego ( our ‘plastic rubbish’) under some chairs with the  arms on the robot, we kept working at it and we did it! We enjoyed the workshop.

P5 Stick Debate

We had a Stick Debate this afternoon; an activity that let us give our thoughts, ideas and opinions on an issue. It made us think carefully about what we would like to say and how best to express it. It encouraged us to practice not only our active-listening skills but also to add constructively to what someone had previously said.

A stick debate means that everyone in the group gets an equal chance to talk and to share opinions.

Each person got three (lollipop) sticks before we started our discussion. Every time someone spoke, s/he handed in a stick. Once our three sticks were used, we could not speak anymore. This made us think carefully about what we would like to say and to try to communicate effectively. We were encouraged to use all our sticks.

Some of the issues we discussed were:

  • Should teachers be replaced by computers?
  • Is handwriting important?
  • Does money buy you happiness?

We had fun listening to each others opinions and trying to change people’s minds!

STEM

Poetry Workshop

Following on from the visit to the “Natural Selection” exhibition at the old AHS, performance artist Gordon Douglas came to visit the school last Thursday to lead workshops with P4 – S2.

Primary pupils listened to some poetry and created their own poems by cutting out words from existing poems.

As part of the same Art project, artist Jono Sandilands will be visiting after the Easter break and using some kind of sound carrying paint, which sounds very interesting!

Red Nose Day

Our school have been raising money for Red Nose Day by wearing something red and buying a Red Nose for £2.

We have been learning about Farhad and his life. He was born in Afghanistan but moved to Iran because there was a war and it was not safe. A man smuggled him and his family to Serbia and he had to throw his bag into the sea because it was going to sink.

Farhad is living in a refugee camp with is family and money from Red Nose Day is helping him and others to have a better life.

Maths – Division

This term we have been learning about division. We know that dividing means to share equally.

The tables we can divide confidently by are  the 2,3,4 and 5.

Today we had to make games which would practise our division skills. We were in our co-operative groups and we had lots of brilliant ideas.

Play

Global Play Day

On Thursday the 20th of February the school had a play day.

It was fun to play all day and to go in other class rooms.

There were cardboard boxes to play with.

We got our play times as usual.

We were allowed to bring a game, a board game, dolls, stuffed toys and Lego.

You were not allowed to bring electronics to play.

We got to go in P1, P2, P3/4, P 4/5, P6/7, the hall, outside and the corridor.

We got our PE times as usual.

I thought it was good but next time the teachers can maybe play too.

It was very good.

Tesselation

We did tessellation. I like  it, you are not  allowed to overlap,  its tricky because you have to draw a line up the paper then cut the line and sellotape  it back together.

Next you add  another zigzag line and cut it too and  sellotape  it again. You have to draw around it on paper and  fill the entire page.

It’s tricky to begin with and  then it gets easier.  You  can not leave any white on the paper.  You can do it with any kind of paper.

Its very fun

 

In our co-operative groups we made a tessellation instruction poster and gave it to P6/7 to see if they could follow them. They gave us feedback about our posters and gave us scores on Attractiveness, what you need and method. We think they enjoyed making tessellations.
