This is the ancient heart of Shetland, and it was at Law Ting Holm, an islet at the northern end of the Loch of Tingwall that the Norse held their annual\u00a0<em>Ting<\/em>\u00a0(Alting) or parliament.\u00a0 This islet was once entirely surrounded by water and accessed by a stone causeway. In the 1850s the level of the loch was lowered, and the holm took on its present form.<\/p>\n<p>If you are keen on walking, the chain of hill lochs to the west of Tingwall makes an enjoyable day out. There are fine walks and good views of Dales Voe and north from the Califf and Braewick areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/tingwallprimaryschool\/uploads\/sites\/1288\/2025\/08\/28123935\/asta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1266\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/sh\/public\/tingwallprimaryschool\/uploads\/sites\/1288\/2025\/08\/28123935\/asta.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Asta Golf Club\u2019s nine-hole course, lying between the road and the lochs, is open to visitors and small groups. Tingwall is a thriving community and its close proximity to Lerwick (6 miles) and\u00a0 recent housing development, has brought many young families into the area.<\/p>\n<p>The School Playground area is open to the public out with school hours.
