Shetland Youth Wind Band Concert

Today, we were lucky enough to get to go to Scalloway Junior High School for a concert by the Shetland Youth Wind Band. It was an amazing concert, the band played so many fun and funky songs!

Our classmates Millie, Kanchana and Rebekah joined the wind band for one of their pieces. We were super proud of them…well done girls.

Film Making

As part of our topic this term, we have been researching different places to live, work, visit and relax in Shetland. This is from the Social Studies section of the Curriculum for Excellence:

Having explored my local area, I can present information on different places to live, work and relax and interesting places to visit. SOC 2-10a

Pupils in P6/7 are turning their research into promotional films about Shetland. They will be learning about film making technology with Mr Tod. At the moment, they are busy writing their scripts for their films….watch this space!

“This is really fun and a good way of interacting with other members of your class. It is helping us to learn about working together.”

Brooke says:

“I am learning about script writing and I’m having fun.”

 

 

 

 

 

Fridays are for blogging!

P6/7 spent a busy afternoon updating their E-portfolios about their learning this week. They are developing their understanding of evaluative language in the process. Check out your child’s blog at home to see what they’ve been up to this week. Have a great weekend 🙂

 

Scottish Parliament Visit

Today, we have been lucky enough to have Muriel Miller, from the Scottish Parliament, visiting us. It has been such an interesting and engaging afternoon.

Muriel shared with us some key information about the Scottish Parliament….and we learned all about devolved powers in Scotland.

After this, we got a chance to experience a mini election. We were separated into small groups, in which we had to choose a leader. Each group represented a ‘political party’ and we had some time to create our manifesto. After this, our group leaders presented our manifestos and encouraged us to vote for them. We then had an anonymous vote, using ballot papers. It ended up with a coalition!

 

      

 

      

      

 

Then, we had a parliamentary debate. We debated whether or not smoking should be banned in Scotland. Kanchana was nominated as our Presiding Officer and she did an incredible job at chairing the debate. We all learned about the ceremony and language involved in a parliamentary debate and we were able to use this when we debated. After that, we voted on the issue and our scores were correlated. This information was given to the Presiding Officer, who created the ‘Bill’. Our ‘Bill’ then got signed by the Queen, thus making it law! It was brilliant, and very interesting.

      

 

      

 

      

 

We would like to say a massive thank you to Muriel for making the trip to see us…we want to know more about Scottish politics now!

Burns’ Celebration.

Wednesday the 25th of January was Burns’ Day….a day to celebrate Scottish Poet Robert Burns. As part of our Scotland topic, we learned some facts about Burns and learned about the traditions of a Burns’ Supper.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had our own Burns’ supper. For many of us, this was the first time we’d tried haggis!

We tried to follow as many of the ceremony’s traditions as we could…we ‘piped’ in the haggis, and addressed it too! We even had some brave pupils reading out some Scots and Shetland dialect poems.

We made shortbread, which was a tasty treat to finish the day. Altogether, Burns’ Day wis braw 🙂

A visit from the Fire Engine!

This afternoon, the fire engine from Scalloway came to visit the school. It was a white fire engine…which surprised us all!

We got to go inside the fire engine and press all the buttons to make the sirens work, as well as have a go of the water hose, if we wanted to.

 

Maisie says:

“It was very loud. I thought it was very cool.”

 

David says:

“I learned that they [the firefighters] have been in fires up to 600 degrees.”

 

Ryan says:

“I learned that the seat-belts in the back of a fire engine are like backpacks.”

Another busy week!

Well….what a busy week we’ve had. Here’s an overview of our week:

Numeracy:

We’ve been working on a few different things this week. Some of us have been developing our confidence in working with amounts of money and giving change. We have created games to practise these skills and we have been playing each other’s games too!

Some of us have been learning about percentages this week. We have been learning about the link between percentage and fractions and using what we have learned to calculate percentage discounts from amounts of money. We’re really getting the hang of it!

Topic:

This week, we have decided upon our final products for our enterprise project. Miss Saunders has asked us to incorporate a recycled element to our product….which made us think! We have been sourcing products to get an idea of how much money we will need. Next week, we will be creating business plans and pitching these to potential investors!

School Show:

On Wednesday, we had our first rehearsal of the show in the hall. It is coming together and we are having really good fun with it.

Trip:

On Tuesday, we went to Mareel to an ‘Into Film’ event. We had a reading of Fantastic Mr Fox in Shetland dialect, then watched the film. It was great and we really enjoyed the experience.
