Viking Shield

For our art project in school we had to design a shield which was going to be made into a real shield for the Scalloway Fire Festival Galley. First we did a vote. The way it worked was primary 4/5 got our classes shields and we got theirs, then we had a debate on who’s shield was going through to the deciding round. Anya Inkster and Aliee Burgess won our vote with two brilliant shields and all the other classes did the same. The teachers had the final vote. Their final decision was Kara Sharp’s and Lois Sinclair’s shields.

Shields

Scalloway Fire Festival

On the 8th of January 2016 the Scalloway Jarl squad came to Tingwall primary school. The musicians came in first  then the jarl squad came in led by Jarl Bryan Garriock and did a loop of the hall.  They sang the Up Helly Aa song followed by their version of ‘Gallaway Girl’.  After we got to speak to the Jarl squad and try on their helmets and hold their axes and shields.  The suits were green and black with deer skin on their backs.  The shields and axes had lots detail and patterns on them.  We really liked they suits.  We think they are spectacular!   We got to see our friend from Scalloway called Robbie Young who was in the squad.  Some of the class are going down to Scalloway to watch the procession tonight.  We hope the weather stays nice for a change!
