Coastguard visit
Today the coastguards came to visit us. There were two men that came, they were called Willie and Ian. We were split into two groups, one group stayed in the class with Ian to begin with whilst the other group went outside with Willie then after about 15 minutes we swapped. It was good fun outside, we got to pretend to be coastguards and save people. 3 people went out to pretend to be swimmers whilst one person was the coastguard going to save them. We had to put this life jacket on them, a helmet and attach a rope to them. Another person got to use the megaphone and shout to the people swimming to let them know they were going to be rescued. Once the ‘coastguard’ was safe to go he ran out to rescue the swimmers, once he gathered them all together as a group we pulled them back using the rope. We did this a few times so that everyone got a shot at doing something! It was great fun! Then we got to have a look around the coastguard pick-up. We sat inside and had a good look around, they had a lot of kit in the back. Willie asked us to stand at the front of the pick-up so we could see the flashing lights when he turned them on. He warned us that we might want to cover our ears as he then put the siren on…it was loud!! The group inside listened to Ian as he spoke about the coastguards. He was really funny. He told us a few stories about when it is appropriate to phone the coastguards. He also spoke about bombs! He showed us a few photos of ones that had washed up on beaches and told us stories about them and the dangers and that if we are ever unsure about anything on the beach then we should phone the coastguards! At the end Ian let us try on the coast guard hats, he had one for boys and one for girls. Nearly everyone tried them on, Willie even put the ladies hat on Miss Nicholson’s head! 🙂
The Daily Mile
Today was such a beautiful day that one of the pupils took the camera out to take pictures of our walk and the sights we see.
Road to Rio
As we are learning about the Olympics this term Tingwall Primary school are taking part in a virtual walk from Australia to Rio De Janeiro passing through the various countries that have held the Olympic Games along the way. We are adding up the miles we all walk during our daily mile and adding them to our walk.
We have already reached Sydney which is 1,603,333 steps. We still have a long way to go though as it is 72,380,227 steps to get to Rio De Janeiro!!
Halloween
Wednesday
We were busy making Halloween decorations for the Halloween party in the hall at the weekend. We had great fun making lots of different things. Miss Nicholson had lots of activities for us to choose from, she put all the choices on the board and we chose 2 we wanted to do. We could make hanging bats, paper chain ghosts, ghost garlands, witches, spider webs, hanging ghosts and lots more. We tried to make the spiders web out of black bags but they didn’t work so we chose other things. We really liked making the paper chain ghost.
Thursday
We learned French words for a witch, a pumpkin, a ghost, a black cat, a pointy hat, a spider and a skeleton:
See if you can work them out!
- Une sorcièr
- Un chat noir
- Une araignée
- Une citrouille
- Un fantôme
- Un chapeau pointu
- Un squelette
Miss Nicholson put pictures of these things around the room, she would say one of them and we would have to stand next to the picture we thought it was. The first time we did this a few of us got a bit mixed up but once she tried it again we all got them right.
We also got to play a quick game of heads down, thumbs up but in french. Instead you would say: “tête baissée, pouces levés” and to say put your head up is “levez la tête”
After French Miss Nicholson split the class into two groups and gave us the bones of a skeleton and asked us to try and put it back together. We worked really well as a team and it didn’t take us long to put him together again. Both groups did make 1 mistake but it wasn’t a big one. We thought this was fun!
Friday
Today after we watched newsround we took the Halloween quiz. Did you know that the old name for Halloween is Samhain and that people in the middle ages were suspicious of black cats because they thought they were witches?! Hundreds of years ago people thought that ghosts would try to return to their old homes on Halloween so to avoid being recognized by theses ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for other spirits. So this is why we dress up!
We used words associated with Halloween for our spelling activities. We all brainstormed and came up with one to put on the board.
During golden time Miss Nicholson brought in a couple of pumpkins for us to carve. A few of us stayed in the classroom to help. We had great fun working together to create these! Everyone had a shot at scooping out the insides. It was very messy but great! When we were waiting for our turn we designed a face for the pumpkin. Once everyone had drawn something we put them on the floor and we chose 2 that we wanted. Miss Nicholson counted up the votes before she carved them for us. She said a couple of us could take them home if we wanted so we put up our hands to see who wanted them and then used lolly sticks to chose 2 people. This was the fairest way. Colvin and Lucy were the 2 chosen to take them home. 🙂
Keeping Healthy
Our topic in health and wellbeing is keeping healthy so we have been looking at different ways in which we can stay healthy.
We have looked at the eat well plate and the different food groups: carbohydrates, protein, fats, dairy and fruit and vegetables. We discussed which foods and drinks are good for you and those that aren’t good for you.
We kept a diary of what we ate and how active we were for a week and discussed this in class. We are a very active class which is great!!
We are creating leaflets for:
- keeping healthy
- what food you should/shouldn’t eat
- having a balanced diet
- staying active
Some of the class are creating leaflets by folding paper into 3 and writing/drawing their information whilst the others are typing their information on the laptops. Miss Nicholson showed us how to create a leaflet using Microsoft Word, changing the paper, adding 3 columns and printing double sided so that when you print and fold it, the writing isn’t upside down.
PE
We have been looking at keeping fit during PE with Miss Nicholson. We have been doing circuits, these are:
- burpees
- bench toe taps
- shuttle runs
- star jumps
- sit ups
- squats
We are keeping note of how many we do in the 1 minute and have noticed that we are getting better as the weeks go on! We enjoy doing this and created our own stations for the circuits last week. We came up with great ideas that really got us working.
