Week 11

Learning Grid Week 11 Primary 4a

Hello!
I can’t believe we only have 2 weeks left of this term. Your learning grid for week 11 can be found on the glow blog or on Teams. Your 3 highlighted activities for this week are:
  • Measure – Perimeter
  • Spelling Check Ups
  • The great outdoors – Nature Diary
There activities are the ones we would like you to do as a minimum.
Remember to initial your work when completed in notebook, quite a few have been forgetting this. It is really handy for us so we can see who has finished. We would not want to miss any work that you have done!
If you need anything or are unsure of anything then please get in touch. Mrs Grant and myself will be in school again this week and attending several meetings so we will not be able to reply as quickly as usual but we will as soon as we have a chance.
The yes/no game will still be going ahead every day at 10.45am for anyone who wants to play. One of the P4 grown ups will try to make sure they are there to help out but feel free to go ahead and play even if me or Mrs Work are not there.

The daily question will be posted in the general section of Teams each day.

Learning Grid Term 4 Week 3 Primary 4a

Thank you to those who have shared their learning with us through emails and posts on Teams. It is great to see what you have been up to. There are more and more of you joining in with the daily question and the playground chat which is really nice to see. Some of you are getting really good at using glow. It has been a challenge learning all these new skills for all of us!

We are moving in to using Class Notebook (in the general section of Teams, along the top) this week. You each have your own folder in here. Have a look around it to familiarise yourself with the different sections. This will be used like a jotter, you can type directly in to it and it saves automatically. I can then access it to see what you have done. Your reading, spelling, story writing and health and well being tasks are all on here. There is also a Scotland section and a numeracy section which we will use more in the next few weeks. You can use these at the moment though to record any work you are doing in these areas.

Here is our curriculum information for the next 6 weeks of the term. It is a guide of what we hope to cover but there will be flexibility in this as we are learning in a very different way this term.

The learning grids are also saved in the files section on Teams. An email went out to parents on Friday on how to access Teams. We will have a daily question that we would like the pupils to answer in the General section of Teams so try to check this out each morning.

We have also set up a channel called Playground where the pupils can chat to each other freely just like they would in the playground.

Please try to become familiar with Teams. We will be using it more and more as we (pupils, parents and teachers) get the hang of it.

Remember, not all activities in the learning grid need to be completed. Do what you can and what works best for you and your family.  If you have any questions about the p4a learning grids or  the P4aTeams page then please send us an email through Glow and we will see if we can help.

Online Learning Week 1

Here are your learning tasks for the first week back. We are going to have to be flexible in our new way of learning so please carry out the tasks in a way that suits you and your family. Remember, not all tasks need to be completed.

I hope you enjoy doing these and I look forward to seeing how you get on.

P4 Christmas Party

We made a great job of our Christmas cards. Everyone who popped in to our class commented on how great they were.

We love African drumming with Joy!

Glow Blogs

We worked together to type up some information to go into our glow blog. We hope you like it.

Snowman in art.

First we drew a circle for the head on a white piece of paper. Then we could make 1 big circle or 2 circles. We painted the sides of the snowman 2 colours. After we added 1 colour to the back ground. Then we added detail to the outer line of the snowman. We added detail to the hat and

Scarf. Then we moulded it to a black piece of paper.

Grapefruit  Pictures

First we tasted the grapefruit some people found it sour some people didn’t.

Then we drew the grapefruit and study the grapefruit.

We drew the outer circle then we did the inner circle.

Then we studied the juice bubbles then we drew the juice bubbles.

Then we painted the juice bubbles before we painted the background.

Then the teacher cut out the grapefruit pictures.

Our poem is the melted snowman.

Learning intention is put full stops in the right spaces. We put our melted snowmen on the wall outside the classroom. We stuck melted snowmen on the paper of the poem. We put all of the parts of the snowman in the wrong spaces because it had melted. We stuck the face pieces hanging of the snowmen. We enjoyed making our snowmen. We wrote to the end of our sheets. We liked that activity.

By IS, SR and AO

We made eatwell plates and we saved it and then printed it out then we did cut stick it on the plate. We chose picture.

Of are choices. It had to be healthy foods and some fruit and veg. we made the picture fit the plate. After we put it on the wall. It looked really awesome. It was so!!!!! Fun.

Pancha Ganapati

It is a Hindu festival. there are 5 colours. Hindu’s particularly celebrate one of their gods Ganesh that looks like a five-headed elephant. The five colours are ruby red, golden yellow ,emerald green, brilliant orange and royal blue. The children get presents every day of the five day festival .They decorate their houses with the colour of the day. Each colour represents something.

Happy Christmas Jumper Day

We enjoyed dressing up in our Christmas jumpers and raising some money for Save the Children.

Merry Christmas

We have been working hard on stories about Edgar from the John Lewis Christmas advert. We have been learning about characterisation and setting.

We love our Christmas Tree which is in the corner of our classroom.

Smoothie Making

We made smoothies with the fruit we got from Tesco yesterday. Both P4 classes worked together. We were chopping, peeling, blending and best of all tasting. We made loads of smoothies and even went on a tour around the school to share our smoothies with the office ladies, Mrs McCulloch, Mrs Nicol and Mrs Angus.

We enjoyed trying some new smoothie flavours:

  • Blueberry, raspberry, bananas and pineapple juice
  • Blueberry, raspberry, bananas, spinach and pineapple juice
  • Bananas, blueberries and milk
  • Bananas, raspberries and milk
  • Bananas, raspberries, blueberries and milk
  • Bananas, raspberries, spinach and milk
  • Bananas, spinach and milk

We were brave and tasted the spinach raw, some of us liked it and some of us didn’t. When the spinach was in the smoothie you couldn’t taste it the same.

We enjoyed trying new fruits and the colours looked really great when it was blending together.

We all learned how important it was to wash our hands before smoothie making and then we had to remember to keep our hands out of our mouths and noses!!! We made sure the tables were clean and used chopping boards when chopping the banana.

Tesco Visit

On Monday we walked to Tesco. When we got there we were shown upstairs, we saw where the manager works and we got to go in the canteen.

We found out that Tesco sell over 300,000,000 items a year.

We looked at the fruit and veg aisle. The items come from countries all around the world including Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, Germany, Vietnam, Bolivia and the strawberries were from the UK.

We enjoyed getting to go in the big freezer, it was 2 degrees so we were cold. They put the items in there to keep them fresh. They get one delivery a day.

P4a

KG – I thought it was really interesting. It was exciting and she answered lots of our questions. I never knew there were 300,000,000 things sold a year.

SL – It was really interesting because there were lots of things we didn’t know about.

AW – I thought it was really fun when we got to go upstairs and talk about what they do.

AO – I liked when we got a tour of Tesco.

EY – When we went upstairs we got to ask the lady some questions.  It was nice going in to the fridge where they keep it fresh.

IS – I thought it was really exciting because we got to go to parts of the shop where people are not allowed to go.

CN – It was really nice of them to invite us to Tesco, now I know how big Tesco really is. I liked to feel the rough skin of the coconut. I thought it was funny that they called the fridge room the cow room.

BM – I liked it when she showed us all the different fruits and the different types.

Grapefruit Tasting!

We had such a lovely afternoon tasting grapefruit and looking at it in more detail ready for beginning to draw it. We used lots of good words to describe the grapefruit such as:

  • shilpet
  • fruity
  • sweet
  • sour
  • tangy
  • acidic
  • bitter
  • fresh

We pulled some amazing faces as our tastes buds experienced the strong taste.  Most of the pupils liked it and said they would try it again. What will we try next?

Healthy Eating

We have been sorting different foods into their correct food groups.

We have been playing some ICT games on food and healthy eating too.

https://www.freddyfit.co.uk/kids/games/lunch-box-maker

We looked at the new menu to see how the meals were put together. We chose our favourite day of the month and explained why that meal was our favourite out of all the options. We spoke about what food groups were covered in the meals provided.

Neil Beattie Visit

We asked Neil to come in and visit us to talk about the new school menu. He explained the food groups to us and how they make decisions on what meals to include. He was very informative and answered a lot of the pupils’ questions. He explained how they are trying to use local foods where possible and how they are rolling out the new menu to the rest of Shetland in the next few months.

He was very impressed at how knowledgeable we are on the different food groups. Well done P4!

Outright Day Preparation

We will all be learning about Outright Day in a few weeks time. This year is the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child so we have begun to learn about children’s rights in the past and the different the UNCRC has made to children’s lives around the world.

Both P4 classes joined together to interview Ms. Hutchison, Mrs Grant and Mrs Henry. We asked them all about their childhoods.

We worked in groups to look at questions and then each group took responsibility for asking the questions on one issue.

We learned lots of different things about life in the past and we feel very lucky to be at school now – they didn’t have iPads or very many computers in the past! They still did lots of the things we enjoy though, like playing outside with their friends and colouring and drawing .

Friction

We looked at how friction makes a difference to the speed that the cars go down the ramp. Different materials on the ramp made the car go faster or slower. The bubble wrap made it very slow.

Play Time

JRSO Competition

Bryn won the primary 4 competition in term 1 to design a bright vest that would be seen in the dark. The whole class did a great job.

Our Junior Road Safety Officers are made up of 4 pupils from Primary 6.

Thank you to the JRSOs for organising this event.

Christmas Card Making

Class Representatives

We have class representatives on both the Eco-Club and the Pupil Council.

Kaylaa is out Eco Club representative and Sunniva is out Pupil Council representative. Good luck girls! We are sure you will have great fun and develop lots of new skills through representating our class.

Visit to Sound Gospel Hall

As part of our learning on Christianity in the community both P4 classes visited the Sound Gospel Hall. We were shown around by members of the church.

There was a television screen in the kitchen – this meant that more people could see what was happening in the church and listen to the service. We could see people in the church from the kitchen!

We also got to see the baptismal pool. It was under the stage and the people had to lift up the floor of the stage and the pool was underneath. It was very deep and it had a tap and a plughole! It takes a few hours to fill up with water when it is used for a baptism.

A lady called Kay showed us the Sunday School room. She showed us some of the songs that the children sing and we learned about what they did at Sunday School. It was very interesting and we had a lovely time.

Gravity Art

We have been learning about Gravity and to demonstrate this we had fun with paint, watching how gravity affects the paint on the vertical piece of paper. It was very messy!

Forces

As part of our Forces topic we have been learning about push and pull, gravity and different types of resistance. We had fun playing tug of war and using toy cars to to demonstrate a push and pull force.

We have made parachutes in class and experimented to find out what aspects affect air resistance. We chose variables for each group to focus on.

Group 1 – Size of parachute

Group 2 – Height of drop

Group 3 – Shape of parachute

Group 4 – Object attached to parachute

Group 5 – Length of string to attach object to parachute

The pupils did really well and worked together to find out what would make the best parachute.

Visit from New Life Church

On Thursday afternoon P4 had a visit from John Rollo, pastor at the New Life Church. The church is based in the Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre. He showed us a video with a time-lapse of how the church is set up on a Sunday, it was really cool to watch.

He asked us to draw a picture of what we thought a church looked like.

Then we spoke about how a church is made up of the people who meet there and not the building iteself.

We are enjoying learning about Christian places of worship in our local community.

Number Notion Homework Pack Afternoon

Both P4 classes gathered together with their parents and carers to learn about the Number Notion Homework Packs which we will be using.

We listened to a presentation then we had a chance to try out the packs in the classroom.

We tried out the games and resources.

We are looking forward to doing our homework with our new packs!

Times Table Patterns

We have been working on our times tables again today. We worked out the stations of the times tables and then used cubes to cover our answers on a 100 square.

Some people chose their colours carefully to make repeating patterns.

We laid out our number squares in order from 2 times table to 10 times table.

We love doing times tables in Primary 4A!

Times Table Rock Stars

P4a have started using Times Table Rock Stars to help improve our recall of the times tables.  We have enjoyed setting up our avatars, changing backgrounds and earning coins. Log in details are in the diaries.  It can be played on a computer or on an app which is free to download.

Here is the website to use-

P4a Class Charter

During our first week of P4a we had a discussion about what we expect out of Primary 4. We chatted about our ideas for a perfect learning environment and how we can make it like that by thinking about our rights and responsibilities.  The class had some interesting and insightful ideas which we discussed together as a class.

The class felt the most important rights were to be listened to, to be ourselves and to respect each other’s rights. We summed it up with these three statements which were a combination of ideas from multiple pupils.

  • We have the right to be listened to and we have the responsibility to listen to others.
  • We have the right to be ourselves and should respect each other’s personalities, talents and abilities.
  • We should respect everyone’s rights and always show kindness while trying to be the best we can be.

We used the idea of a swan for our charter since we have a lovely new school logo. The swan was decorated with blue tissue paper and all the children in the class helped with this. We got a bit messy and used far too much glue, it was good fun! The pupils each designed their own feather showing their creativity and style and we have circled these around our swan.  We hope you like it!

Letter Writing in 4A

In primary 4A we wrote letters to ourselves. First we talked with our partner about what we were looking forward to in Primary 4. We wrote a plan for our writing and then we wrote a letter.

We wrote about things that we were looking forward to in Primary 4 and what we hoped to be able to do at the end of primary 4. Some of us wanted to improve our handwriting, to learn how to do more complicated maths, to memorise our times tables or to be able to row in a boat.

When we wrote our letters we tried hard to remember to use capital letters, to write detailed sentences and to use punctuation such as full stops and commas. We wrote a first draft of our letters then we re-drafted it using pen.

We put our letters in envelopes and addressed them to ourselves. We drew designs on our envelopes and we coloured them in with crayon and coloured pencil.

We put our letters up on the wall and we are going to open them at the end of primary 4. We are excited to see how we will grow and learn throughout primary 4!

Some of our class proudly displaying their letters.

Working together to improve outcomes for learners to be the best that they can be.
