With teamwork, creativity, and a whole lot of imagination, the children used their engineering skills to build cozy homes for their chosen animals\u2014complete with some unexpected luxuries like TVs and hot tubs!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Designing with Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The challenge began with some big questions:\u00a0<em>What makes a good home for a nocturnal animal?<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>How can we build it using the materials we have?<\/em>\u00a0Working in small groups, the children chose their animals\u2014<strong>badger, fox, owl, or hedgehog<\/strong>\u2014and got to work sketching their designs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cA hedgehog\u2019s house needs lots of leaves to stay warm\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cOur fox needs a secret tunnel to hide\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The children carefully thought about the needs of their animals, considering shelter, safety, and comfort, all while showing off their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Creating with Junk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With their designs ready, it was time to\u00a0<strong>build<\/strong>! Armed with\u00a0<strong>junk materials<\/strong>\u00a0like cardboard boxes, bottles, paper, and string, the groups brought their designs to life. The classroom buzzed with excitement as everyone worked together, using their\u00a0<strong>meta-skills<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cate the Collaborator<\/strong>\u00a0helped them share ideas and work as a team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focusing Fergus<\/strong>\u00a0kept everyone on track, even when things got tricky.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Critical Thinking Chris<\/strong>\u00a0inspired them to problem-solve when parts of their designs didn\u2019t go as planned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results were nothing short of spectacular!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The owl\u2019s home<\/strong> had a cosy corner for resting and reflective tape so it could fly in and out of its home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The badger\u2019s den<\/strong>\u00a0featured a television!<\/li>\n<li><strong>The fox\u2019s den<\/strong>\u00a0had a clever tunnel entrance and a hot tub.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The hedgehog\u2019s house<\/strong>\u00a0was packed with leaves and even had an extra space for the baby.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Sharing Our Creations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once the homes were complete, each group presented their work to the class, explaining how their design met the needs of their nocturnal animal. The presentations showcased not only their creativity but also their growing confidence in speaking to an audience<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The children loved hearing about each other\u2019s designs, and the variety of ideas sparked even more creativity!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>The Aftermath<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By the end of the session, the classroom was a\u00a0<strong>total mess<\/strong>\u2014but they children enjoyed themselves and ended the lesson with a smile on their faces.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>What We Learned<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This STEM challenge gave the children a chance to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply their understanding of nocturnal animals and their habitats.<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0<strong>design thinking<\/strong>\u00a0to solve real-world problems.<\/li>\n<li>Develop\u00a0<strong>collaboration, focus, and critical thinking<\/strong>\u00a0skills through teamwork.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Next Steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Inspired by the success of this project, the children are already asking what we can build next!
