Trip to the Galley Shed

Some of our pre-school pupils had the opportunity to visit the Lerwick Galley Shed the week before Up-Helly-Aa.

We got to hold on to the torches – they were quite heavy! We held on to special peerie torches, the ones used in the procession are much bigger and heavier.

We got to try on helmet in the room upstairs. We sat at the long table and looked at all the pictures on the wall. Nicol found a photo of his grandad!

We got to go up into the galley. We sat in the galley. We got to see what the colour the galley was painted but we knew we had to keep it a secret!

We really enjoyed our trip to the Galley Shed and we appreciated the members of the Up-Helly-Aa committee who let us visit and who told us about all the different things.
