We had a fantastic time at Scalloway Youth Centre learning about STEM with Scott from the Science Skills Academy.<\/p>\n

What is energy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scott explained there was seven main types of energy – heat, light, gravitational, sound, movement, chemical and elastic.\u00a0 The first activity was to look at some energy sorting boards and decide what type of energy was being used.<\/p>\n

Then we had to look at different objects and decide what energy went in and what energy was expelled.\u00a0 We also had to consider what energy was wasted energy.\u00a0 We explored how electricity was generated and used in the home.<\/p>\n

Build a battery<\/strong><\/p>\n

We then built working batteries using cola battery cells.\u00a0 We had to measure the voltage generated using a voltmeter and figure out how big the battery needed to be to power a lightbulb.<\/p>\n

Electronics and circuits<\/strong><\/p>\n

We built circuits using magnetic circuit components.\u00a0 We were able to make flashing lights and sounds by putting the right components together.<\/p>\n

“We are learning more about what energy can be.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“We learned about different types of energy.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“I never knew about chemical energy before.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
