Tracey works at he museum and she came into our class with a box of Victorian toys.\u00a0 We found that most Victorian children would have only a few toys.\u00a0 Very different to our childhoods now!\u00a0 Toys were mainly made from wood and some of them were home made. She thought some children might have only been allowed to play with their toys once a week.\u00a0 Never on a Sunday though!<\/p>\n

Football<\/strong><\/p>\n

Football was a common sport amongst men at that time.\u00a0 No women would be involved!\u00a0 The ball was hard, not bouncy and it would have been very sore if it hit you in the face!<\/p>\n

Duckie Doll<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was made from straw.\u00a0 It’s a doll you would have seen a lot particularly in Shetland.\u00a0 It was not a cuddly toy and could break easily.<\/p>\n

Kaleidoscope<\/strong><\/p>\n

This made lovely patterns when you turned the end.\u00a0 Some pupils had something similar at home.<\/p>\n

Skipping Rope<\/strong><\/p>\n

Less popular now, but it has been popular till recently.<\/p>\n

Tumbler<\/strong><\/p>\n

This had two bits of wood which when squeezed together made the wooden acrobat spin.<\/p>\n

Ball and Cup<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were all a bit frustrated with this!\u00a0 It was so hard to get the ball in the cup!<\/p>\n

Spinning Top<\/p>\n

A lot of pupils recognised this one.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Even though these toys were really simple we all had fun trying them.\u00a0 Tracey asked us to compare these toys to the toys we have now.\u00a0 A lot of pupils have ‘gadgets’ rather than toys.<\/p>\n

“They were really cool and interesting.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“It was interesting to see a real Victorian toy.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“It was surprising how similar some toys looked to todays toys.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“I was amazed to find out the spinning top would have been the most expensive.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Next Step<\/em><\/p>\n

We are going to make our own replicas of some Victorian toys.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
