Stories of the Sea Museum
Parents and carers were invited into our class to see our Stories of the Sea Museum.
It was great to have the opportunity to share some of the great stories we have been learning about. We have found out about The Braer, The Shetland Bus and Haaf Fishing. Mrs Stewart had also prepared two songs – The Unst Boat Song and Ronas Voe.

Finding out about Creels
Tom Robertson works on a whitefish boat but he also has a shellfish boat. He came in and told P5 about how creels work. The following notes were made by Brigitte and John.
- When a crab goes in it can’t get out.
- You are not allowed to harvest female lobsters.
- You can catch stuff other than crabs.
- If you are lucky you can catch one or two crabs in the creel.
- There is cement in the bottom of the creel to help it sink down.
- Sometimes you don’t know what you are going to get.
- You need a license to harvest more than two creels of crabs and lobsters.

Reading Week and Parents

Reading Week
We have been doing a lot of reading activities this week.
- When the bell rang unexpectantly we had to stop and read our library book.
- We made a display for our door. We decided to do it on “A Stranger Came Ashore,” this is our class novel.
- We read the Shetland dialect book “The Ooricks,” and we made up our own Oorick.
- We went to to Book Swap and we all got a book to take home.
- We watched the “Footy Booty” quiz.

Trip to the Beach
Today we took a wander down to the Sands of Sound. It was a bit blustery but we were wrapped up warm and ready for action! Our topic is Stories of the Sea and we visited the beach with three main aims related to our topic.
Firstly we were gathering shells to use in a display for our Stories of the Sea Museum.
Secondly we wanted to check for plastic pollution and do a safe and quick beach clean.
Lastly we were going to be creative and make some beach art.

During our time outdoors we used our collaborative meta skills working in pairs and groups. Pupils were being creative and developing their sense of curiosity.

Bressay Guizer Jarl Squad Visit

Sphero Coding
Eleanor Hutcheon came in to our class today and did Spero Coding with us. This session introduced the concept of an algorithm and computer languages. She also introduced pupils to Spheros. Pupils explored maths concepts including speed/distance/time and angles.

Shetland Dancing
In teacher led gym we have been practicing some Shetland dances. We can now do the Boston Two Step, Strip the Willow, the Gay Gordons , Orcadian Strip the Willow and the Gay Gordons. It cheers up every Thursday!
