Art Lesson

In Art p6 have been learning about the European artist Pablo Picasso.  Having looked at and discussed his work, pupils have gone on to abstract shapes and proportions to create their own self-portrait in the style of Picasso.

Visit from S6 AHS Pupils

Today a group of 6th year Advanced Higher Biology pupils from the Anderson High School visited our class to tell us all about the systems of the human body as part of our class topic. We had a great time and we learned a lot! They also told us what they were planning to study following on from studying biology.  Dentistry, pharmacy, neuro-science, being a doctor, animal biology and marine biology were all mentioned.

MC – “It was very interesting.  I loved labelling some  parts of the skeleton.  I also learnt about the heart and the digestive system.”

BL – “It was nice to hear what they were planning to do after sixth year.”

LL – I found it quite cool seeing the x-rays and learning about the brain

RR – I really enjoyed seeing the x-rays and the bones in the body.”

EJ – “I liked seeing the numbers to test colour blindness.”

LL – “The illusions were cool.  It was all interesting and I found out one of the smartest animals is a dolphin.”

Wildlife Garden with Buddies

We took our buddies into the Wildlife Garden to get to know them a little better.  It was lovely to see the classes playing so well together.

We have been discussing meta-skills and how they help with successful learning, life and work.

Primary 6 were developing their communicating, leading, collaborating and creativity meta-skills.

Buddying with Primary 2

We met up with our buddies on Friday for the first time!  The class were really excited to meet them.  Each Primary 6 pupil read a book to their buddy then they listened to their buddy read their reading book.

Femur Investigation

We have been finding out more about the skeletal system.  We discovered the femur is the longest bone in the body.  We decided to investigate if the person with the longest femur could jump the farthest.  We all measured our femurs with the help of a partner.  Then one by one we jumped! Mrs Hunter had the second longest femur but she jumped the shortest distance-98cm.  One of the pupils with the shortest femur jumped the longest -1m 80cm.  This opened up lots of discussion about how we could make our experiment fair – Should it be people of the same height? Age? Weight?

Meta-skills being used were curiosity and sense-making.

Senses at the Beach

We visited the beach to get inspiration for a senses poem.  As part of our topic we are finding more about our senses and how we use them.

After we had gathered ideas we used Go Find It Too cards, a bit like a scavenger hunt.  We had to look for something a particular colour, feeling or shape.

Then we had a bit of time to explore the beach.

We focused on two meta skills – feeling and creativity.

Mindfulness Trail

As part of our topic we have been learning about the importance of good mental and physical health.  We have been finding out more about Mindfulness. We decided to explore the space around the school and think how each space could be used in a mindfulness activity.  Back in class we designed out trails covering the infant wing playground, the senior wing playground, the wildlife area, the multi-court and the activity area.

At some point later this term we are hoping to share our trails with other classes.

MS   “Mindfulness is good for your mental health.”

BL  “It’s taking a break to wind down,”

KG  “It’s time to yourself.”

MC  “Mindfulness is time to think.”

RR  “It’s finding somewhere quiet.”

RH  “It’s chill and relax time.”

We have been discussing meta-skills and how they help with successful learning, life and work.

The meta skills we covered were leading, creativity and communicating.
