Art Lesson- Clay

In Art Primary 5 have been learning to form clay to create a coil pot.  First we needed to roll out the clay to create a good strong base.

We then had to roll out long worm shapes to make the coils to build the sides of the pot.

We needed to be careful to blend in out joins to make it look neat.

Once we had added at least 4 coils we then spent time smoothing the pot to ensure it was neat and has a good surface to paint on.

Once the posts were complete, we left them to dry for a few days.

We then painted them with a few coats of paint before decorating them.

Great job Primary 5!

Sunflowers

As part of our Water topic we are learning about the importance of water in a plant’s growth.  We each planted a sunflower seed and we are measuring it’s growth.  Each time we measure we estimate first.  Measurements are recorded in centimetres and millimetres then changed to millimetres.  The results are then being added weekly to an Excel graph.  Our window is a perfect sun trap so they are growing quickly!

Fundraiser for the RNLI

At our recent Stories of the sea Museum we decided to do a fundraiser for the RNLI.  Together both P5 classes  managed to raise £192.71.  Rhoda Watt came in to collect the cheque.  She is part of the fundraiser committee for the Lerwick Lifeboat.

Mrs Watt shared some information about the Lerwick lifeboat.  It is an all weather lifeboat with two turbo charged engines.  It had 18 call outs in 2023 and it has had 11 so far this year.  A three hour call out costs the lifeboat £1500 in fuel.  The lifeboat relies on donations and legacies to keep going. This past March the RNLI celebrated it’s 200 year anniversary.  King Charles in now the patron.  A recent purchase for the lifeboat was a heat seeking camera.

Some of the meta-skills that the Museum fundraiser included were:

  • communicating
  • feeling
  • collaborating
  • leading
  • creativity
  • curiosity

Thank you for all donations and thanks to Mrs Watt for coming in to speak to us today.

Outdoor Learning – Disappearing Puddle

With this lovely weather we have been having, we decided to time how long it took for a puddle to disappear in the playground.  We measured it’s length and width  every 15 minutes.  We calculated how much it had shrunk by each time. It took just under an hour to disappear.  This tied in well with our Water topic where we have been learning about the water cycle and evaporation.

Some of the Meta-skills that this experiment included were

  • communicationg
  • focusing
  • sense-making
  • curiosity

Outdoor Learning – Saving Water

Our topic is Water and we have been considering ways water can be saved in the home. We made water butts from plastic milk bottles.  We then attached them to the fence around the polytunnel. We decided that was the the best place to put them as they were less likely to get disturbed. We were careful attaching them to the fence, making sure each one was upright and not at an angle. Lids were glued on ensuring they would not leak. Each day we have gone out and measured the rainfall. We will be using these results to make a graph using Excel.  During our time outdoors we used our collaborative meta skills working in pairs. Rainfall gathered will be used to water plants.

Rain Cloud in a Jar

We had fun with shaving foam and blue dye.

We have been finding out how clouds are part of the ‘water cycle.’ Water in oceans, lakes and rivers evaporates making water vapour, which rises into the air.  When the vapour hits cold air it turns back into droplets which stick together to form clouds.  Eventually the clouds get so full and the water falls back to the ground as rain.

Reducing, Reusing and Recycling in Music!

We have started Term 4 in Music by learning about the importance of looking after our planet and how we can reduce, reuse and recycle our waste materials. Having been inspired by the Landfillharmonic orchestra of Paraguay, we created our own musical instruments out of things that we would normally throw away. Here are a few photos of the class making their instruments.

Watch the clip to see us using our recycled instruments as part of an Earth Day song.
