Victorian Musical Inventions

P6a have been learning about music in Victorian times. They’ve learned about different musical inventions including the player piano, penny-in-the-slot, music box, phonograph and street piano.

The barrel organ was an instrument which would have been played in the streets during Victorian times. We learned a tuned called ‘Kafoozalum’ which would have been played on a barrel organ and we played an accompaniment to the tune using tuned percussion and boomwhackers.

Making Shelters

We took Stevie the Sloth into the wildlife garden and the challenge was to make a shelter for him.  We split up into small groups and found branches, leaves and grass to make a shelter that he could fit into.  We had to work as a team, listening to the ideas of others.

Pupil Voice

It was a good way to get outside and work together.”

“It was a different way of being creative and it was great to be outside.”

“We all had good ideas and we were all different!”

Guizer Jarl Squad Visit

The Guizer Jarl squad visited us first thing on Friday morning.  They were looking great and were in good voice!  Before they left we had a chance to look at their shields and axes.

We also had a lovely visit from Miss Wiseman, Ryan and their lovely baby son Taylen. (On the same day)

Victorian School Day

Izzy came into school last Thursday and helped us create a Victorian School Day.  She brought Victorian styled clothes which helped us get into character.  We set out the desks in rows and we were all facing the front.  Izzy was a very strict teacher, demanding pupils should sit up straight and not talk unless asked.  We discovered life at school was tough going in Victorian Times!

We had fun taking the photos, sad faces then happy faces!

Pupil Voice

“I really enjoyed the Victorian School.  We learnt what it was like in Victorian Times.  I had to go to the corner because I said I couldn’t write with my right hand.”

“It was realistic and we learnt old fashioned cursive writing.”

“It was like getting into a time machine.”

Literacy Week

Book Fair

We started the week off by heading to the library to browse through the books at the Book Fair.  Our class as part of their leadership role for Literacy Week had helped set up the books.  There was plenty of lovely books to choose from. Through the week we helped when other classes were browsing and buying.

Library – eServices

Louise and Louise who work in the library came in to the school to tell us about the Libby and Borrow Box apps that are connected to the Shetland Library.  Both these apps have a fantastic selection of books, audio books and magazines.  It is totally free!  You just need your Shetland Library number and your pin number.

World Book Day

Some pupils (and teachers) dressed up for World Book Day.

We also took in our favourite book to share with the class.

Throughout  the day we were working on activities related to our class reader – The Explorer.

Classroom Doors

Every class in the school has decorated their door with a book theme.  We did Oliver Twist as we had just finished reading that for our Victorian topic.  Here are the other doors in the senior wing.

Character Hunt

Parents were invited into the school to share a favourite book from home.  There was also a character hunt

Royal Navy Stem Event

We had a visit from the Royal Navy last week.  They set up three stations for our class to work around.

Station 1

We had an interesting lesson on submarines.  We found out how many there were and the weight of one submarine.  We found out what was needed to survive on a submarine.

Station 2

We set up our own circuits and made a small part of the circuit fly into the air.

Station 3

This station involved coding.  The right code had to be added to make the Sphero balls move away then return.

Pupil Voice

“The activities were fun!  We made a circuit that allowed a propeller to spin.”

“It was cool finding out how heavy the submarines were and how you could get air out of salt water.”

“We learned how electricity works using the hot wire circuit.”

Dashing White Sergeant

We have been doing Shetland dancing and getting on great.  However we had one dance we found tricky to do as we did not have enough pupils – The Dashing White Sergeant.

Primary 7 came to the rescue.  Primary 7 in their leadership role have been helping other classes with dancing and they offered to help.  They love this dance and enthusiastically showed us how to do it.  We really enjoyed it!

Climate change Roadshow

Adam, Elliot and Anne came into our class with the Climate Change Roadshow.  The Scottish Government has placed a legal requirement on local authorities to be net zero by 2045.  Adam, Elliot and Anne are raising awareness about climate change and organising a Shetland Climate Festival in September.

We spoke about what we already knew about climate change and we discussed our worries.  We thought about our own carbon footprints.

The next step for us is to enter a Climate Change Competition.  We have to design a poster, write a poem or story, or create an advert that will promote positive thinking for Climate Change.  A book is going to be compiled of winning entries from schools all across Shetland.  Some of us even got interviewed today by Adam.
