Trip to the Whalsay Heritage Centre

On Friday, 20th of April, P7 went to visit the Whalsay Heritage Centre to learn about WW2 in Whalsay with Marina Irvine and Allison Simpson.

We went into the room on the right side and saw a table with lots of information and pictures. We sat down and Marina began to talk about facts and stories from Whalsay in WW2. One of the things we listened to was about a person who went for a walk and found the body of a German pilot. Another thing that happened was a plane that got stuck on some stones at the Symbister Ness, A lot of the metal from the plane was used to make jewellery (brooches and rings).   There was some information about the Wart o Clate and when Harlsdale was a RAF camp.

After listening for a while they showed us an old pilots hat, gas mask and a large shell case.

Once we were done looking at the hat, gas mask and shell we were allowed to look through the books and at the pictures. One of the books had information about people who were in WW2 in Whalsay and some people found their relations. Another book had people stories from the war and one other had some songs.

A lot of pictures looked a lot different from now and some had newer photos next to them so you could see the difference. After a few minutes of looking at the photos and artefacts someone found a plate that they used for soup in the camp.

Before we left we got a picture taken of us but it isn’t on the schools camera.

One person said that they enjoyed it because there was so much to learn.

We really enjoyed going to see the artefacts and would like to go back again.
