Activity Week

In May some of the P7’s were going on a trip to Stirling with the older classes for a week.  Some of our class and the Secondary’s stayed in Whalsay at the Secondary.

Before the trip we had planned out all the activities we would be doing that all of us would like and enjoy.

On the first day of our fun activity week, we did an activity game called the hunger games with, we thought it would be a game when they hide our food and we could only eat it if we found it, but it wasn’t!  It was a game when you were in pairs and we had compasses to show us the directions, we were down at the pitch and there were cones spread out everywhere and we had sheets of paper to see where we had to go.  Each bit of our food had a different number for a different clip for the next part of the hunger games and we had to follow directions and find the clip with numbers on them, if we read the directions wrong we didn’t get that bit of our packed lunch!  Thankfully I think we mostly got it all right and had all our lunch.

The second day of the activity week was a day out of the isle, we were going clay pigeon shooting!  We went out early in the morning in the minibus with Mr Spence and Mrs McGregor and Mrs Hull drove in her car, and we arrived there in time.  We all used the same gun, and a man who worked there helped us hold the gun and told us when to shoot.  It slightly hurt on your shoulder if you didn’t hold it tight enough, I didn’t – so it hurt a little!  We had another round and Faye won!  Now it was time to head to the Burra beach.  Once there in the minibus we just had to walk down a piece of road and there it was! Some of us were in our swimsuits it was such lovely weather, the water was cold but if you were in it long enough it warmed up and you could have a swim further out from the beach. Me and Emma found an old cat he was very friendly.

The third day of our fun week was a day at Skaw, to play golf.  Miss Irvine drove us there in the minibus.  We were put into pairs and went to different parts of the golf course than others.  We practised on the little course first while some of the older ones were on the other golf practice place. We had shots of both of the courses then we went with some of the different golf players in our pairs to play a proper game.  We played for the whole morning and then we went back to the school for dinner.  We had our dinner then we had a bake off! We picked our own pairs and then we had to bake out own cupcakes, the ingredients were on the board.  We were judged by the teachers to see whose were the best, everyone won!

Us when we all won!

The last day was a trip to Bressa for an art exhibition about Shetland. We went out early in the morning to meet Amy Gear at the Bressa ferry.  We went out and we met a woman who showed us her Shetland exhibition, it was a bit unusual, but impressive. We learnt about her work then drew some pictures of our surroundings outside, after that we ate our lunch and went back to Whalsay with the ferry for the end of the activity week.

Stirling Trip

On Monday the 28th of May p7 to s3 went on a trip to Stirling.  We went on the Northlink and then drove to Stirling the next morning. On route to Stirling we went to Blair Drummond Safari Park. In the safari park they had lots of  fun rides and they had dodgems. They also had a big playpark and sand pits. There was a zipline and pedal boats. Before we left the safari park we went on the ‘drive- through’ safari and that  was really  cool. Lots of people chose the Safari park as their favourite activity.

We then continued our drive to Stirling which took us a further 30 minutes. When we got to Stirling we went to Frankie and Bennys for our tea.

Our favourite parts on the trip were: the go karts, trampoline park and safari park because they were all really fun and enjoyable.

Our favourite restaurant was Jimmy Zhengs and Frankie and Bennys and our worst restaurant was the Filling Station.

Overall we really enjoyed the trip and we would love to go on another one!

P7 Homework

For our homework we picked to do a play about the Blitz. We had 2 weeks to create and practice our play before we had to perform it in front of the class.

The first thing we did was to write a rough script to get an idea of what the play was about. The next thing we did was make the props, we made Kirsty’s bomber plane first then we made bombs out of socks and a sign that read ‘2 days later’. After that we adjusted the script and tried on costumes, we got the costumes from Faye’s Granny Ruby. We also got some inspiration from Faye’s Da George William.

Next we went to Lori’s house and again adjusted the script and showed Faye and Lori’s Mams our play and they said it was BRILLIANT!

The last practice we had was at Kirsty’s house. We did it in front of Kirsty’s Mam, Isla, Granny and Da. They also said it was brilliant!

On the day of the play we were in a hectic rush to try get everything ready before the bell rang for playtime. After playtime we got on our costumes and put in Faye’s plaits.

We used a desk for our Anderson shelter with some material on top and we used the whiteboard for some background effects. Overall we think the play went really well and we all received a merit for our house teams.

Here we are doing our play!!

Trip to the Whalsay Heritage Centre

On Friday, 20th of April, P7 went to visit the Whalsay Heritage Centre to learn about WW2 in Whalsay with Marina Irvine and Allison Simpson.

We went into the room on the right side and saw a table with lots of information and pictures. We sat down and Marina began to talk about facts and stories from Whalsay in WW2. One of the things we listened to was about a person who went for a walk and found the body of a German pilot. Another thing that happened was a plane that got stuck on some stones at the Symbister Ness, A lot of the metal from the plane was used to make jewellery (brooches and rings).   There was some information about the Wart o Clate and when Harlsdale was a RAF camp.

After listening for a while they showed us an old pilots hat, gas mask and a large shell case.

Once we were done looking at the hat, gas mask and shell we were allowed to look through the books and at the pictures. One of the books had information about people who were in WW2 in Whalsay and some people found their relations. Another book had people stories from the war and one other had some songs.

A lot of pictures looked a lot different from now and some had newer photos next to them so you could see the difference. After a few minutes of looking at the photos and artefacts someone found a plate that they used for soup in the camp.

Before we left we got a picture taken of us but it isn’t on the schools camera.

One person said that they enjoyed it because there was so much to learn.

We really enjoyed going to see the artefacts and would like to go back again.

John Muir (Kergord)

On Monday the 26th of March 2018, P7 went to Kergord to complete part 2 of their John Muir experience.

First we went on the ferry to Laxo to meet up with Pete Richardson, he was going to take us to Kergord to explore the woods and wildlife. When we got to Laxo Pete had to make sure everyone was in the proper attire (waterproof clothing). Then we got into the bus then Pete put some music on but it was very loud, so we all did some karaoke, it was funny.

At Kergord we got out the bus and walked through a sheep field and guess what… we all went in the wrong woods, even the teachers! We were the first people to go in the wrong woods (in the John Muir experience). So we had to climb back over the fence and go over to the correct woods.

After finding the RIGHT woods we walked up to this tiny platform of grass, where Pete instructed us to put down our things and roll onto our stomachs. We had to stick our noses in the ground and smell the earth.

After we breathed in the smell of the earth and grass we had to leave our stuff in the clearing and follow Pete. He took us for a hike all around the woods. But not just any hike, we had to jump over streams, climb through trees and walk across fallen tree trunks etc.

After we completed these tasks we walked over to our bags and pack lunches and took them with us so we could eat them in a old house. We had to climb over bridges and in water to get to the old house. When we got there we opened our lunches and had half of what was in them. While we ate our lunch Pete told us some stories about John Muir.

After that we went into our co-operative groups and we had to build a fort out of things you would find in the woods (Sticks, leaves etc). Pete told each group to go to a certain part of the woods and build our shelters.

This group had Sky T.V.    (Do you get the joke? ^)

After that we went back to the house and ate the rest of our lunch, Pete had also lit the fire so we would warm up. Then we went around and looked at the groups forts, there were five shelters all together.

Just before we went back to the bus we played the worlds best game of hide and seek. After we played it we went back to the bus took off our waterproofs and got in the bus to go back to the ferry.

We all really enjoyed going on this John Muir trip and would probably want to go on it again.

African Drumming at the Shetland Music Festival

On Wednesday, 14th of March we went to Mareel to participate in the Shetland Music Festival.

After going to Mareel on the bus we walked up the stairs and into the cinema. The screen was showing footage from a camera in the auditorium (where everyone was playing their instruments).

Each class got a row of seats to sit in whilst watching other classes, before performing themselves. After listening to a few classes songs and eating our snacks Joy gave us a choice of having coloured fabrics as headbands, skirts or other things.

Later on we learned that we had to go and play because our bus would be there soon.

We went out of the cinema into a long room where you could look over a wall and see other people getting juice, coffee and tea (or other things). The room had two couches and a few tables. We only stayed in the room for a bit before going through a door and walking into the green room to get ready. Although it was called the green room, the only thing that was green was the couches. There were instruments on shelves and a piano in the corner. On the walls were grey cuboids that looked like mattresses. We went through a door and down some stairs to fetch our drums from a storage cupboard.  Next we headed to the stage curtains to wait for the people on stage to finish.

We then headed onto the stage and there where two judges and some other people sitting on seats watching.

We began to play Salsa Jagbe, we started off quiet and began to get louder which built up suspension. We went through the whole routine without any mistakes except for speeding up at the end when not supposed to, but it didn’t matter because the judges didn’t know that!

Preforming our song.

The adjudicator (judge) decided that we deserve first place (gold).

Our award and the judges notes.

Once we were done we left to go to the ferry back to Whalsay and walked back to the school.

Decimal

Last week we got a task to write a song/poem/dance/rap about decimals  (you could  do a rhyming song and dance at the same time) we all got rules which we had to do a song about. We had lots of fun.  Here a couple of the songs:

Song 1:  Our rule was dividing by 10 (we did it from our view):

When dividing by 10 take a jump to the left, (then we all jumped to our left), just 1 not 2 because if you do, your answer will not be true! Our decimal point then said, I’m a decimal point that cannot move, then we did jazz hands. It was lots of fun, and everyone enjoyed watching it!

.

Song 2: “When timesing by 100 just takeatakeatakea 2 jumps to the left, but you gotta mind the decimal point or you’ll go blind!” After that we all threw our paper with the numbers up. (Instead of jumping we passed our paper across so it was changing).

After, when we knew our songs completely and  had another practise, we showed them to the primary 6s, (we had a choice), they enjoyed it as well.

This was a very fun way of learning, and it was very helpful to our learning. Here are some photos of everyone:

P7 trip to Mareel

On Wednesday the 20th of February  P7s and P5/6 went on a trip to the Mareel to see an art show called The Colony made by an artist called Dinh Q Lê. We went out on the 9:15am ferry when we got to the other side there was a bus waiting for us.

When we finally got to the Mareel we were greeted by two people called Amy and Jane they are the people who were in charge of the art exhibition. They then took us into the auditorium where the exhibition was –  before we went in we had to take off our shoes.

In the auditorium there were 3 big screens all showing different videos on them. The first screen had the old houses the workers used to live in, the second screen had a flock of birds on it and the last screen had the men harvesting the guano (bird poop). In the middle of the floor there was a big paper cut out of a island with paper nests on it, the last thing in the room was a cabinet with information in it . After we had watched all the videos on the screens they turned on the lights and we went back into the middle of the room to take a quiz.

The last thing we did was we had to pretend to be birds and fly around the room to find materials to decorate a nest on the island, they videoed us doing this so they could make another film.

We went back on the bus to catch the 12 ferry back in.

We had mixed feelings about the installation!

P7 Homework

For my homework I did ‘Maths Genius’. I had to bake or cook an old wartime recipe, and I baked a WWII ration chocolate cake.  It had vinegar instead of eggs, and cocoa powder instead if chocolate. It tasted heavenly and everyone loved it.

For my Homework I did Make- do- and -mend and I made a  toy using recycled materials. I got a juice carton and cut it in half – up and down the way. Then I cut a small wheelhouse from the half a carton and stapled it on. I made some decoration on it and tested it to see if it could float. It was an easy thing to make and I got a merit for it.
