P6/7 walked to the Sandwick beach as part of HWB week. They filled six black bags of rubbish. Well done to the class.

P6/7 Olympic Games (Sports Day)
We got a fine afternoon on the Harbison Park for our class sports. There was a mixture of team and individual events – sprint, ‘rubber boot’ throw, obstacle course, wheelbarrow/piggyback race and, most importantly, tug of war. Well done to all competitors!
P6/7 Olympics
Here are primary six and seven playing the Olympic themed games which each cooperative group made:
P7 Eshaness Trip
On Tuesday, 25th of May 2021, P7 went on their first John Muir trip. We went to Eshaness and it was so much fun. We met at the pier and we got ready to go on the 8:30am ferry. When we got to the other side then Pete Richardson took a while to get there and he said he was stuck behind concrete! When he finally came then we headed to Eshaness on the mini bus. It took a long time but when we got there he gave us special bags to put our packed lunches in and our water bottles and stuff, he also gave us a helmet to wear when we got to the cliffs. We had to wear our masks on the bus but when we weren’t in the bus then we could take them off. We walked down to the cliffs and saw a raven. Pete said it was good luck to see a raven in the morning. We finally got to the cliffs and Pete told us to walk in single file line and not go too near the edge. We did all sorts of things and challenges that included going through caves, climbing up steep clefts and looking over the edge of a really high cliff. At one point we were told to go to the other of the cliff but we had to hold onto the wall. We sat down and had our lunch on the edge. The scariest bit was either climbing the cleft or going over a ledge where we couldn’t even see our feet. Pete showed us where a volcano was, but don’t worry, it’s not active. He said that the volcano had erupted years ago and the whole lot of the cliffs and rocks were actually formed by the dry lava from the volcano!
Eco Group
In the Eco Group we go up to the poly tunnel with Mrs Hutchison. We look after the plants and the frogs. Mofasa, Simba, Buddy, Mickey and Scar are the frogs. We water the plants and sometimes we put the frogs on our cheeks. 🐸
We did a litter pick around the secondary with Miss Irvine and Mrs Hutchison. The group that went with Mrs Hutchison were, me, Brooke, Louis, Frankie and Micheal. We went around the secondary. Miss Irvine’s group was Neve, Emily, Ashleigh, Alice, Joe and Liam. They went around the school. We got a bag and a half full of crisp packets and 79 other things.🧃
At Christmas we made Christmas trees out of bottle lids for Fern Lea. We designed some on pieces of paper and we voted for the 5 best designs. It was really fun!🎄
And finally we’re thinking about changing up the roundabout and a space near the nursery with flowers. We’ve already started in some spaces and they look really pretty. 🌴
Bikeability 2021
Every year primary six gets bikeability with Danny Peterson. Bikeability is really fun. Whalsay school gets it every Thursday its when we learn how to go on our bike safely on the road. Danny gives us these tests like doing right hand turns, safe start, u turns then safe stop. He sometimes lets us do fun things like racing and obstacle courses. He is also really funny and finds a way to help you remember things, like when we first started he told us that every night before we go to bed we have to chant L.S.L. It stands for look signal look. It’s what we do before we start cycling. You look over your shoulder then you put your hand out horizontally (what ever way your turning) for three seconds then you look over your shoulder again and go.
Eco Committee
This term the Eco Committee has been working hard in the poly tunnel. We took turns to go up with Miss Hutchsion. When we get there we do some planting and look after the frogs that live there. We made a pond for the frog and they really enjoy their home. We named five of the frogs. Their names are Buddy, Simba, Mickey, Mufasa and Scar but there are more to be named.🐸
Recently, Miss Hutchsion took us outside to plant some flowers in the raised beds near the entrance. We planted some Livingstone Daisy’s, Marigold and more. After everyone finished planting we gave it a good water. It really cheered up the front of the school.🌺
The next project that we are going to work on is we are going to plant some flowers next to the peerie tar.🌈
Sandwich Challenge
Primary 6/7 has been learning more about healthy eating choices during home learning. One task has been to create a nutritious sandwich. Here are some of their delicious creations together with excerpts from their blogs:
“I made my mum a super, satisfying, scrumptious sandwich…”
“I was very proud with the result because it IS the best sandwich in the word!…”
“I have made the most delicious tuna sandwich ever. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed. Here’s how to make it…”
“The super seedy chicken salad sandwich is super tasty. As soon as you have one bite your mouth will be watering for more…”
“This sandwich is healthy because it has salad and brown bread. The brown bread doesn’t just keep it together but it’s better for your digestive system. White bread isn’t the healthiest choice. Bonne apatite!”
“This is our healthy sandwich, and its called Scrumdiddlyumptious…. buy yours today www.healthythingscanbeyummy.com # stop eating unhealthy things at McDonald’s…”
“The Triple ham sandwich is the best sandwich EVER! No other sandwich is ever been better and never will be.”
“The sandwich I made today was the worlds best sandwich because everyone who saw it drooled so much until they died of dehydration.”
A super selection together with some very persuasive text!
Concert 2020
This years concert was very different as there was no stage, no audience, no dress rehearsals and no live performances. Though some things were better. It wasn’t as nerve racking as we could record it as many times as we wanted. Though it was annoying getting in and out of a suit a ton. Our concert was about news reports – (corona, guising, weather, happy news, us election and Christmas).
Team Captains
Last term we had to make a team captain speech and have an election for team captains. It was very exiting and competitive everyone was very nervous to see who got it. All the school voted. We had a proper voting booth and ballot boxes for the voting slips.
